My dear friend Lucas and I will be Junctioning (of the Hallelujah variety) TOMORROW! Come hear us play some of the Biggest Bops of the last Hundred Years at 7:30pm at The BLANC, where you will catch several North American premieres by @sofia_ouyang and @milesvwalter as well as my perhaps ill-fated decision to reduce Ravel’s Frontispiece from 5 hands to 4 hands… Tickets at the link in my bio! by @lucasmusicks

Pulsing Sound 2026–27 Season Opener
Permutations: A Piano Extravaganza
📅Saturday, October 17 · 7:30 PM
📍THE BLANC

Pianists Lucas Amory @lucasmusicks and Max Hammond @maxhammondpiano join forces with the Steinway Spirio for an evening of 20th- and 21st-century piano music, featuring works by Ravel, Nancarrow, John Adams, Sofia Ouyang, Miles Walter, and Lucas Amory—across four hands, two pianos, new arrangements, and premieres.

Pulsing Sound is THE BLANC’s cross-disciplinary concert series, curated by @sofia_ouyang and conceived as a platform for music, experimentation, and interdisciplinary exchange. “Pulsing” speaks to sound in continuous motion—passing between bodies, instruments, spaces, and artistic forms, changing and gathering new possibilities as it moves.

Following its inaugural season, Pulsing Sound returns with six new programs. Permutations opens the new season.

“Lorik Jan” (Dear Little Quail) by Hannah Ishizaki

Titled after the final lyrics in the Armenian folk song “Kele kele,” “Lorik Jan” celebrates a beloved little quail which you can hear dancing and fluttering around in this clip ✨ this piece has been such a joy to play with Lucas over the last year and it never fails to brighten up any room :)

a HUGE thank you to @hannahishizaki for her eagerness in joining this project and this absolute gem of a piece, and of course the one and only Lucas Amory @lucasmusicks on piano— Hannah’s full piece and all the other works Lucas and I recorded can be found with the link in my bio!

——————

Hannah’s piece, along the other commissions and the folk songs they are each based on, was recorded for my project “Komitas and Friends: Armenian Folk Music, Then and Now”— an ongoing initiative to commission, record, and perform works for clarinet each based on different Armenian folk tunes I grew up with. Քելե, քելե (Kele, kele) - “Strolling, strolling”

Absolutely thrilled to finally start sharing the recordings from this project that’s been so close to my heart— five commissions each based on a different Armenian folk song I and so many within this community grew up with, all notated and collected by the composer/ethnomusicologist Komitas.

This particular song, Kele kele, tells the story of a little quail strolling along and spoke to the incredible @hannahishizaki, who composed the duo “Lorik Jan” (Dear little quail) in response to it. (In a separate post, and linked to this reel once I figure out how to do that!) ✨🐣

I have so much more to say and share about this ongoing project and these amazing people (much of which is laid out in excruciating detail on my website), but for now just a massive shoutout to Lucas Amory @lucasmusicks for his incessant enthusiasm and sensitivity in discovering these works with me, the Juilliard composers who wrote these companion pieces that fit so uniquely into everything I love about music, and the team at Oktaven Audio for these absolutely gorgeous recordings and videos.

All of the other folk songs and commissions can be found on my website/YT! (Linked in bio) 🫶 by @lucasmusicks

This Wednesday at Dame Myra Hess Concerts, pianist Lucas Amory performs a program spanning Mozart, Fauré, Tailleferre, Florence Price, and Debussy.

From the elegance of Mozart’s Rondo in D major to the shimmering textures of Debussy’s Études, Livre 1, the afternoon explores color, lyricism, and virtuosity across generations of piano repertoire.
