Diogo Luz is one of the best coaches I have ever worked with, and without doubt one of the most deaf-aware coaches I have met throughout my career.

What many people don’t know is that my admiration for Diogo started long before he became my coach. Back in late 2019, I attended a University of Hertfordshire match against Brunel and watched him coach from the sidelines. Even then, I could see how knowledgeable, passionate, and committed he was.

At the time, there weren’t many futsal opportunities in London, and I wanted to play and learn as much as possible. I even considered asking whether I could train regularly with his university team because I knew how much I could learn from him.

Years later, I ended up being coached by him at Maidenhead United. Looking back, it’s funny how things work out sometimes.

What many people also don’t know is that I came very close to leaving the club before Diogo took over as head coach. In all honesty, he was the reason I stayed.

From day one, he believed in me, challenged me, supported me, and created an environment where I could be myself and enjoy playing again. He never saw deafness as a barrier and always found ways to communicate, include, and get the best out of every player.

Coaches come and go throughout your career, but every now and then you meet someone who genuinely changes your journey. Diogo is one of those people.

I can’t lie, I was gutted when I heard that he would be leaving Maidenhead United Futsal Club at the end of this season and stepping down as head coach of the women’s team.

Some of my favourite memories in futsal were created under his leadership at Maidenhead United.

Thank you for your belief, honesty, patience, and relentless commitment to helping us improve. You’ve helped me become a better player, a better teammate, and a better person, both on and off the court.

The impact you’ve had on my life will stay with me forever.

Thank you for everything, Diogo. I wish you and Paula every success and happiness in the next chapter of your lives in Portugal/Spain.

Once a coach, always a coach. ❤️⚽️

Building more than a team.

Building standards, belief, resilience and a culture that players want to be part of.

Proud of this group and the way they competed throughout the tournament. With only one substitute available all day, every player showed character, commitment and determination from the first whistle to the last.

These two videos are my favourites from the tournament. Not because of the goals themselves, but because they show the teamwork, communication and decision-making we’ve been working on. When the moment came, the players recognised the opportunity and found the backpost. That’s futsal. ❤️

As a coach, my role is simply to guide the players and help them become the best version of themselves on the court. The players deserve all the credit for their effort, commitment and willingness to learn.

There is nothing more rewarding than seeing ideas discussed on the tactics board come to life on the court.

This is only the beginning. The results will come. The process continues. 🐝⚽️🧡🖤

A huge honour to be part of the programme at Deaf Expo with the BDA. ❤️

Thank you to Jamie Clarke for hosting the discussion, and to William Palmer for sharing the stage with me as we spoke about Deaf football and futsal, representation, accessibility, and our experiences within the game.

It was also such a lovely day spent networking within the Deaf community, reconnecting with familiar faces, and meeting new people. 🫶🏾
