Margaret of Antioch, the patron saint of childbirth whose feast-day is 20 July, was said to have been swallowed by Satan in the shape of a dragon, but by maintaining her faith burst out of his stomach unscathed.

Western mediaval art tended to depict her miraculous escape, while Eastern Byzantine iconography focussed on her battle with the demon, showing her grabbing his hair & swinging a hammer at his face.

My sculpture, pared down to it's essential features and left in this raw state, is based on a 16th C French church statue in the V&A. I've sketched it many times, trying to decode the underlying message of original sculptor - there's a undeniable spark of sexual tension alongside the pregnant piety.
Beneath the exquisite surface details, clear lines direct the viewers eye around the sculpture; her chaste hands held in prayer angle down to the beast at her feet. Her arms & drapery frame her maidenly breasts, and emphasise her swollen belly. A 'v' shaped fold at her groin also points to the dragon. Her look is sweet and trance-like even as his sharp jaws tear her cloth, and his tail snakes affectionately up her thigh as she straddles his body. The unbroken gaze between them completes this electric circuit of conflicting emotions.

Every time I sketch the original I'm blown away thinking of the countless girls and women who over five centuries would have knelt before her, gazing up in hope and fear. The closest thing they had to health insurance.

I created this piece a few years ago. I future I think I'll tackle Margaret in the act of killing her demon..💃🐉

Fun facts about St M:
🌟 Joan of Arc was a big fan-girl and said she was guided her.
💥 St Margaret's in Westminster, the parish church of the Houses of Parliament is dedicated to her
☠️ St Margaret is reputed to guard against plagues, so turn to her next time Covid rears up.

The sacred feminine has claws and flaws... Some more shots of my Birth Death Rebirth sculpture.

It fires me up as a sculptor to take a
block of rejected stone (& bone from the scrap-heap) and create something powerful and precious.

I like to leave traces of the statue's story - the tooling that shaped her, the saw marks that cut the block and the raw surface of the broken stone.

I carve until I feel the form come to life - and then stop, putting aside my chisels before I dampen its spirit with prettification. This is part of the immersive joy of #DirectCarving... Rather than imposing your will onto the material you have to watch and listen to see where it wants to take you..

This work is with a private collector in America but if you want to know when new sculptures become available - DM me your email address and I'll put you on my mailing list.

It's 7 years since a Crown Court verdict changed my life — and the artwork that I create.. 🔥💃 💥
Finally being believed, having confirmation that I wasn't mad but justifiably wounded, meant that I could drop my pain and start again

This unhinged feeling after s3xual assault is all too common: disbelief and scorn from the very people who should support and protect really exacerbates the long-term impact. And this sense of fractured reality can easily become a downward spiral that's difficult to escape from without support. @survivenyorks was there for me..

You can't change the past, but you can 'turn sh:t into manure'. Until this point I'd carved stone to commission, depicting my clients stories, never my own. Now I put it all into my work — as cathartic self-expression — and advocacy for the vast majority of victims who haven't yet received the recognition, belief and support they deserve.

Image 1- detail from my current work in progress, a figure emerging from the flames.
Image 2- #ShameEndsHere, one component of my Arts Council-funded multi-disciplinary group project with the Make Your Mark collective to show how widespread s3xual violence is, and it's long-term impact. The project includes a film and text-based art based on our collected Book of Testimonies, and a booklet of supporting data.
👉 The map registering the number of *reported* incidents of r&pe and s3xual assaults over 1 year in North Yorkshire is a scaling up of #threeweeksinmay the pivotal #artactivism by @suzanne.lacy that resulted in legislative change in California in the 1970s.

👉 Get in touch with me if you would like to show our multi-disciplinary artwork, or are interested in using our GDPR compliant methodology to map the incidents of SV in your region 💥

Today, we’re delighted to launch our campaign to create a permanent memorial to Queen Anne Boleyn at St Peter’s Church, Hever.

Although Anne is commemorated by a 19th century ledger stone within the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula at the Tower of London, there is no dedicated memorial to her in the place where she worshipped and where generations of the Boleyn family are remembered. Our vision is to change that.

Designed by award-winning stonemason James Elliott (@james_elliott_marble) and gifted sculptor Lucy Churchill (@lucychurchillstone), the memorial will stand in the Bullen Chapel at St Peter’s Church, creating a lasting place for reflection and remembrance in a setting deeply connected to Anne’s life.

If this is a project you believe in, I’d be enormously grateful if you would consider making a donation or sharing the campaign with others. Every contribution, whatever its size, brings us one step closer to making this memorial a reality.

Thank you so much for your support ❤️

Preparing artwork for New York...
Notes from Daughters - a cross-disciplinary exhibition that asks "What happens when daughters step out from the shadow of their fathers?"

💥 Artwork from twenty women across the world, curated by inter-disciplinary artist @leahelimeliah of @goodgirlfilm @wordshednyc:
'Notes from Daughters began with a question that haunted me: How do the words our fathers said or never uttered shape the women we become? ... When you walk through Notes from Daughters in September 2026, you won't be just simply viewing art, you’ll be witnessing acts of revolution. Each piece is a declaration: This is who I am beyond expectations... ' 💥

✨ My Vulval Maddona, Sacred Wound and Healing Touch sculptures will show alongside The Book of Testimonies photograph and My Body, My Choice screenprint✨

👉 *23 Sept - 22 Oct* - Baci STUDIO, 140 Plymouth St, Brooklyn NY

I've been invited to show 3 postcard sized artworks at the @aopaprojects Summer Show - opening tonight at The Royal Society of Arts, London - thanks to @carriescottcurates of @watchseenart who originally brought me into the fold 🌟 Many thanks to @gemmapeppe for inviting me this year.

The theme this year is 'Illuminated'.
I chose to focus on the secondary meaning of the word — Enlightened: To "illuminate" a concept or person, to make an idea lucid and clear, or to bring spiritual/intellectual understanding.

I see 'light at the end of the tunnel' —
The ongoing prevalence of male violence is no longer a taboo or niche subject (ie only whispered about by women and minority groups for fear of reprisals). Over the last year the issue has been openly discussed in Parliament and the national press.... Finally.
The recent uproar in Britain over the lenient sentencing and lack of empathy for two young rape victims shows both the problem and that society has had enough.

How many times do we say Enough for real change to occur? Every conversation is a step in the right direction, an opportunity to enlighten those who don't know (through willful ignorance and privilege). Every conversation is a chance to shine light on this dark and nasty problem in society. Every conversation makes it acceptable for people to say #MeToo and talk about the hidden and down-played long-term effects of gender-based violence.

My Arts Council @aceagrams funded project #ShameEndsHere has been raising such conversations through film, maps and text-based art. Currently touring - get in touch if you'd like the MakeYourMark collective to show it in your locality — lucy@lucychurchill.com

My 3 hand-drawn postcards entitled 'My Body My Rights' are available to buy via @aoap. Get in touch if you'd like to know more.

Sharing an interview with me in York's magazine 'for the creatively curious' aka City Folk (Issue 5) now that the summer edition has hit the shops.

I compare my different career phases - from working as a team in the stonecarving trade to my current iteration as a fine artist to being like a trained session musician - 'You have to step up to the solo stage and take ownership of your own creative vision, mining your psyche and laying it bare in your own expressive style..'.

As well as talking about creative highs and lows, I voice my *dream project*:

'..to create a contemplative sculpture garden; distinct spaces with artworks emerging from the earth and surrounded by plants. A place to get away from the world and consider different ways of being..'. 🌿
 - just putting that aspiration out into the universe in case someone with a shared vision reads this.. ✨

(I think if you *really* want to read the full text you can by using your fingers to enlarge the photo 😄👌)

----
The new Summer Edition of City Folk is entirely focused on @yorkstjohn @yorksjart whose Degree Show is on now 🌟 There's some excellent work so everyone who can - come and take a look!

Last night Reignite @aestheticamag's York-based hub was held at York St John's, bringing together artists at the top of their field to share insights with those who are just emerging. Great insights warmly given.
Basically the message is - just keep at it, and support each other on the way.
It feels great to be part of this engaging and expanding creative community in the heart of our much loved city of York.
