Trying to paint the sea! Not easy especially when you’re living in London 🤣

Am looking to market/ sell my work to fund this paint addiction of mine 🤣 Let me know if you fancy trying out one of my paintings at home.

I’ve been thinking lots about painting water recently, particularly the sea (see pic 4.)

The Blue Thames painting began with the idea of wanting to paint my grandmothers garden, with all its evergreens, perennials and trees and the statue of a boy fitting his shoe back on that was in her garden as a young girl. My grandmother lives near the river and Richmond bridge so I got excited about adding these features to the painting.

Experimenting with painting the sea comes from my love of the sea and the colour blue. I want to create something that makes the viewer feel calm; just as the sound of the sea, its smell and the reflections of the sky on it (particularly when it’s sunny and the sky is blue!) uplift us.

I’ve never managed to peel off a ‘pour’ before so when I realised it wasn’t the colour I wanted I peeled it off and there was this woven pattern underneath.

I removed the scarf from the right of the table which looked very flat and now I’ve just got a trace of what looks like pink clouds circling on the curve of the table.

I’ve put on and taken off a lot of paint in this painting and what I love most about something I’ve worked on for a while is when paint is wiped away from the previous day and the colours underneath shine through, holding the work together with an area of supporting colour, giving a little “glimmer” of hope.

A little ambivalent about this painting. Will keep it for its colours and not so much for the ‘study in ellipses’ 🤣☺️♥️

Bowl of Dreams

The interior of the bowl is quite cloud like which on this busy table cloth is a gentle, clear and almost empty place to rest the eye

Summer

Am only just beginning to realise how lucky I am to be creative. I have been able to afford materials and just enough time to paint so as I move on - and leave teaching - I plan to do more and to share more ❤️

May 🌸 I had fun painting this today. It’s not quite finished but I’d like to keep it fresh.

My attempt to paint my lovely neighbour Sandra hasn’t been very successful. My canvas was very large and using a photo to make the painting, getting the contours of the face and capturing ‘character’ defeated me! (The glue I used to size the painting made the surface quite rough and bobbly which didn’t help with me trying to finish it.)

I’d quite like to try painting my granny from life although I think the smell of turps won’t be very good for her (and the mess in her drawing room might not go down too well either)!

Self portrait

This is a warm up to some possible portraits. Am thinking of doing some of friends in the area and have collected some material to begin work on good friend and neighbour @sandrasoothes. It will be nice to try and capture something of friends and also hope to bring in some of SW11! The plan is for the focus to be on the portrait and the background will have some correlation with, not a reproduction of, the area. Besides, we are surrounded by estate agents and who wants to be reminded of the property market!

I’ve had a busy day painting today - hurray!

Have been taking picture shots - in my mind - while out and about and then in the evening am making these remembered scenes into a ‘daily composition.’ What is lost technically - in these drawings - is made up for with enthusiasm 😂 They don’t take long and I like to think that I’m more relaxed - about my compositions - when I’m back in my studio.

I’m putting my head on one side while painting/ looking at the still life and realise now that’s why the glass here is quite wonky! Planning to invent a hilly background. (And hope to stand straight and make the glass do the same!)

1. Let’s go Swimming! I put this still life ‘face’ together after our sunny holiday in Florida thinking it was a fun composition. The blob at the top left is a rock from Pembrokeshire and the pink stone inside the bowl, I now see is a tongue! It’s named after a song the kids love singing at school and of course an all round love of water + swimming. The lovely bowl is Caro Keeble @prettypotty_carok
2. End I went to see ‘End’ at the National theatre yesterday afternoon and Clive Owen and Saskia Reeves were brilliant at their roles as a couple facing the agony of coming to terms with terminal cancer. The play is set in the kitchen, pregnant with raw emotion and with the familiar refrain “Cup of tea?” repeatedly used I felt compelled to make a kitchen based water colour when I got home.
