POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Seven years in the making plus an urge to disappear has begotten the greatest artistic journey of my life. This is the first look at HOW BRIEF - a disappearing act written and starring the impossibly magical Tess Degenstein, world premiering at Sundance. Inspired by the music of Connie Converse and other women who have chosen to vanish, this image is the last frame before the 16mm mag ran out, flaring green and red, because women courting oblivion can be gorgeous, no?

If you need me today, you’ll find me swimming in a pool of gratitude, alongside Tess, Ariel, and Lucy and the artists below who I will follow forever. Thank you from the bottom of my wretched artistic heart for dreaming this dream with me, and thank you @sundanceorg for inviting us to share it. We’re swooning ✨

Lucy McNulty - Writer/Director/Cast of "Chicken"

Lucy McNulty is an actor, writer, director and producer based in Vancouver whose work spans film, theatre and new musical development, with a particular commitment to underrepresented communities and female driven stories that are unafraid to explore complexity and the shadow side of human experience.

A graduate of @studio58, McNulty is the recipient of the Sydney J. Risk Foundation Acting Award, the Leon and Thea Koerner Award in the Fine and Performing Arts and a Jessie Richardson Theatre Award.

McNulty has performed across Canada at @pushfestival, the @nac.cna, @luminatofestival and @banffcentre. She is currently co writing "Cowboy Tempest Cabaret" with collaborators Niall McNeil and @antonlipovetsky for @musicalstageco. The project received The Aubrey & Marla Dan Fund for New Musicals in 2021 and 2022 and was shortlisted for the Playwrights Guild of Canada’s Tom Hendry Award in 2021.

McNulty wrote, directed and stars in the award winning short film "@chickentheshortfilm," which received both the Jury’s Choice Award and the DEAI Award for Diversity, Equity, Access and Inclusion at the 42nd Annual @thomasedisonff. She has also produced several short films, including "Cracked Open" through Cracked Open Productions.

McNulty also wrote and starred in "At The End," which screened earlier this year at the 2026 Sundar Prize Film Festival.

"Chicken" was inspired by one of McNulty’s childhood friends, whose life experience includes Down syndrome. Having rarely seen characters like him represented on screen, McNulty wanted to create a story that reflected the humour, intelligence, depth and compassion of a person with a disability without making the relationship precious or idealized.

Through siblings Sam and Emmett, whose relationship has developed over 30 years, McNulty explores the particular honesty that can exist between siblings and the ways they see one another beyond society’s expectations. Their relationship becomes a lens through which the film examines romantic disappointment, adulthood, failure, resilience and the expectations people place on themselves and one another.

At its heart, McNulty envisione A promotional filmmaker graphic for "Chicken" featuring a black-and-white portrait of Lucy McNulty centred inside a white Polaroid-style frame secured at the top with a strip of yellow tape. Lucy has shoulder-length wavy light hair, wears a dangling earring, and looks directly toward the camera with a composed expression. The Sundar Prize Film Festival logo appears along the bottom of the Polaroid. The white textured background is decorated with pale teal watercolour splashes, droplets, and paint marks. Beneath the portrait, bold black text reads "LUCY MCNULTY," followed by "Writer/Director/Cast" and the film title "Chicken." taken in North Delta by @lucymcnultyy

Over the damn moon that HOW BRIEF has won Best Experimental Film at Bucharest🔮

Yes, this is a still from the film, achieved by glorious old school smoke & mirrors, plates of glass 1 min left on the 16mm mag. Bless experimental cinema and all those who live and die by arts & crafts💎

Inspired by the music of Connie Converse and the poetry of other women who have chosen to vanish, How Brief stars writer Tess Degenstein, Tatiana Maslany and Gray Powell. I hope you are curious because you are about to see us around a lot more…

Congratulations to everyone who worked on this film. Thank you for dreaming in the same direction with me ✨🥲

KING ARTHUR’S NIGHT is back in Toronto! this time at the TIFF Lightbox this Sunday.

This wild medieval musical documentary is unlike anything else, I promise. Created by a company of artists with and without Down syndrome, and adapted from the acclaimed stage production by Niall McNeil, Marcus Youssef, James Long, and Veda Hille.

Even better, this screening is sensory-friendly and designed to be as accessible and welcoming as possible. If you’re in Toronto, go. Go, go, GOOOOO(AT)!
