We’re sitting in Lucy Rutter’s light-filled studio, in Faversham, Kent, on an unseasonably cold April morning. ‘Have you seen the gorse in Cornwall at this time of year?’ She smiles, ‘it’s beautiful: spiky and hostile.’ She turns to look at a shelf, a row of her jugs sitting elegantly upon it. ‘The flowers remind me of my yellow glaze.’ This citrusy yellow glaze beams brightly from various shelves around the studio and I too am reminded of tiny gorse flowers scattered across the Cornish coastline. We are talking about the particular relationship between Cornwall and pottery. ‘The clay from Cornwall is amazing quality,’ she explains, ‘I love it. It’s thicker, more textured and darker in colour.’ Drinking our coffee from some of her stony coloured, older, stouter mugs, feeling their grittiness, the importance of the tactile nature of the clay is obvious: the memory of touching pebbles and granite boulders that lie on the beaches around St. Ives within our hands. ‘Touch is what makes pottery different to an artwork,’ Lucy decides, ‘They are made to be felt and to be touched.’

“Newlyn Art Gallery has long been a source of inspiration for me and every time I visit I love the selection of ceramics in the beautiful shop.”

Today we celebrate Lucy Rutter, whose work we have been delighted to stock for just over a year. Her pieces have proved popular with our visitors and ceramic enthusiasts alike, and we are so pleased to continue sharing her beautiful work. ✨

After twenty years of self-taught pottery, in 2015 Lucy trained at Hilderstone in Kent, at St Faith’s in Maidstone, Morley College in London and finally at the @theleachpottery Adult Education Programme.

Lucy has exhibited in The Picture Room in 2025 alongside her husband @guyrutterpaint where their works circled around each other, sharing concerns with formal elements and colour combinations.

On our shelves at Newlyn Ary Gallery you will find Lucy’s classic Tondo Sets and her most recent Teapot Sets, glazed using the traditional Chinese Tenmoku method. 🍵

Our full range of Lucy Rutter ceramics is available in the gallery shop at Newlyn Art Gallery and through our online shop.

We’d also like to thank Lucy for her wonderful designs, which have often featured in our window displays — effortlessly complementing every season and showcasing the versatility of her work. 🌿

We hope you'll enjoy discovering Lucy Rutter on our gallery shelves and via our online shop (there is a link in bio to a selection of Lucy Rutter works).

A few cups which somehow, to me, look like early Autumn. Today is the day that here in the north we begin to tilt away from the sun.

But. My window is open and the light is soft and the air smells earthy and lovely. We’re still harvesting tomatoes, courgettes, chard, onions, garlic, many herbs, runner beans, rosso lettuces and flowers from the garden. Drying time for pots has slowed down which is lovely for handles but not too much which is nice for production. And no socks so far … #autumnpottery #autumnequinox #handmadecups taken in Faversham, Kent by @lucyrutter

Milk jug and water jug. But they could be used for anything: flowers, wine or even displayed just as they are, on the shelf. I’m going to make more of these for @eastkentartistsopenhouses 24-25th October when Guy and I will open our studio in Faversham for the weekend; we’d love to see you there. They’ll also be at my festive markets: @firedcornwall in St Ives on 15th November and then @toast Festive Market in London on 10-13th December so I really hope to see you ✨

Sunday morning back to bed with tea ritual. This is today’s soundtrack I think, and these are my current favourite mugs - the glaze is lovely and glossy, and there’s real depth to the glassy greeny-bluey-speckled grey; a bit of energy, I hope, in the form; a gentle spiral inside, left over from compressing the base; the clay body nicely toasted and reduced, still visible where I’ve held the form with my fingertips to glaze it. Have a lovely Sunday ✨

Some nested forms, reduction fired and glazed in a soft whitish bluey greeny grey a bit like the colour of the sky today 🩶

I’m starting to build up some pots for my Open Studio which is the 24/25th October, part of @eastkentartistsopenhouses so these will be available then!

Just a teapot, fired close to the burner I think so it’s a soft bluey-green on one side and quite a toasted iron-green on the other. I just loved him. He’s now available @newlynexchange at Newlyn Art Gallery where I hope he finds a happy home. And I might make another 🩵

One of the loveliest things that happened to me last year is that I became a stockist at beautiful @newlynexchange one of my favourite places to see ceramics. They had a lot of work; mostly teapots, teabowls, cups and ‘tondos’ (our word for serving dishes with nesting bowls inside).

So another lovely thing is that they have sold out and ordered more work! So today I’ll be popping along to restock with these new teapots and teabowls and some mugs. So nice, thank you so much Newlyn Art Gallery 🙏✨

We are on our way west to beautiful @theleachpottery to deliver these pots to the incredible shop and I’m also teaching a workshop next week.

I cannot wait to meet my students and get back into that very special space where nothing else really seems to matter apart from the beauty of the process, the groggy red lovely soft Dobles clay. The simplicity of making pots efficiently.

The shared space, the kindness of the community, the gentle ness of thoughtful people. A Japanese garden, the quality of the light, sharing a pot of tea after a morning’s hard work. Wiping down the bats and mopping the worn wooden boards, dusty with clay, at the end of each day.

Apparently there are a few spaces left on some courses this winter, do take a look at their website if you fancy joining us.

The start of September today - ah I love it! - and for me that means starting with new work.

I love the changing light at the tail end of August, the different temperature in the early mornings and evenings, and of the cool slabs outside my kitchen under my bare feet. The rustling overblown glamour of the foliage-full soft summer trees, visible from my bedroom window.

So I thought you might like a few glimpses into my studio which is currently in full-blown summer play and experimentation mode. The drying rack full of different clays and one or two unusual shapes, too, for me, ready for a wood firing which is hopefully going ahead next week.

The second photo is a glimpse through into our house, with @guyrutterpaint ‘s beautiful encaustic painting behind the door. The last picture is a shot of my work bench in the middle of the day yesterday as I was finishing up some forms, trimming and putting handles on water jugs. Damp boxes of pots in the background - in the summer I rest them inside plastic boxes so they don’t dry too fast and crack. Apron and rags caked with clay, bowls of water and slip in various thicknesses for different tasks, buckets of glaze. I find it hard to have the studio in disarray so I tidied this up before the end of the day so that I could get in there this morning and begin in a clean space with a different clay body and a different mode of working - production.
