IMAGINING THE FUTURE OF ART: Charlotte Kent on Visual Culture, Artificial Intelligence, and Contemporary Aesthetics

Interview Series: Media Arts, Visual Communication Design, and Technologies

Interviewer: Marie Green @meta4media
Interviewee: Charlotte Kent @lucyscribbles

How are artificial intelligence, algorithms, and digital technologies transforming the ways we create, encounter, and interpret images? In this interview, Charlotte Kent, Art Writer and Associate Professor of Visual Culture, explores the changing relationship between visual culture, technology, and artistic practice, drawing attention to how social media and algorithmic systems have already transformed our ways of seeing.

Kent questions the tendency to treat “AI” and “AI-generated works” as a single, homogeneous category. She examines the different networks, processes, material conditions, and creative practices that constitute generative AI, while asking whether these systems should be understood as tools, collaborators, or phenomena that require new conceptual frameworks within art history and contemporary aesthetics.

The conversation moves beyond technology itself to consider visual literacy, imagination, aesthetic judgment, authenticity, authorship, and human creativity. By questioning the frameworks through which we see and understand images, Kent invites us to think critically about what changes when artificial intelligence becomes part of contemporary artistic and visual culture. I’d written on enchantment for the Shimmer catalogue accompanying the gorgeous show at the @fristartmuseum curated by @mwscala and got to revisit the issues for the symposium over the opening weekend. In conversation with artists, attendees, curators, docents, and more, I kept thinking about the enchantment “AI” fosters and how artists seem to be manage to skewer it playfully. So thank you to everyone for ideas and encouragement, that is the enchantment of work.

🙏 @studioamelia @chaletcomellas @rachelrossin @nancybakercahill @squirrelzurkow @sayawoolfalkstudio @annadumitriuart @lutz.koepnick @paulc236 @tinariversryan @prometheanwatch @alicegraystites for invigorating conversations
And thank you @marykateparmer for making my 9-25 complete 👢 💖

BAXTER ST is excited to present Photography’s Expansion and its Discontents: A Conversation Between Charlotte Kent (@lucyscribbles) and Danielle Ezzo (@danielleezzo).

Please join us on October 22, from 5:30–6:30 PM for a conversation between Charlotte Kent and Danielle Ezzo about photography and AI from a historic, critical, and artistic perspective. Doors open at 5 PM.

Writing in The Brooklyn Rail (@brooklynrail), visual culture scholar and art critic Charlotte Kent traces these ambiguities to ask whether photography is the only appropriate lens to view this slippery emergent technology. Danielle Ezzo, an artist and writer whose practice is built within the territory that Kent theorizes, speaks to the embodied experience of straddling two media that are constantly connected yet often in conflict. Together, their live conversation will move between the historical and the material, the theoretical and the embodied to bring the paradigm shift into clearer focus.

When people think about AI-generated art, they usually think about the resulting output: the image generated by a technical process deemed mysterious or unimportant. But what if the most revealing part of the work happens long before the finished picture appears?

Charlotte Kent (@lucyscribbles), editor of the new monograph “Sofia Crespo × Anna Ridler: A Field of Collaboration,” reflects on how the duo’s attention to process upends tech’s fever dream of effortless automation.

Commissioned and developed by Arab Bank Switzerland as part of Sofia Crespo and Anna Ridler’s 2025 Artist of the Year award, Sofia Crespo × Anna Ridler: A Field of Collaboration is published by @hatjecantzverlag.

Congrats @timkentstudio for Sojourn @hollistaggart though the irony isn’t lost on any of us that the world of art is hard work and we all want to rest even though fall season has just begun ;)
So glad to see some friends and celebrate in passing catch-up convos 🤩
I had to leave as the party was just getting going in the gallery but I got to glimpse the tumult before my next journey ✈️ It’s been a long summer of studio work 💻 🎨with rare glimpses of one another in the 🧭 toing and froing 🚂 🚗 🛥️but here’s to the show that inspires us both to take a real sojourn…soon….

My mother was a huge Dolly Parton fan and thrilled when she got to interview her for Cineaste, but I only learnt this maybe a year later when I uttered some tweeny snobbism and my mother took me to task, made me listen to her songs, told me about all the good Dolly did, probably lectured me on some basic feminist values, all of which blurs in memory except that I walked away understanding I would never again presume to know — let alone judge—someone on first impression. When I took over my mother’s estate last year, I was so proud to learn that her interview with Dolly was featured in the biography by (and had a lovely exchange with the) author Tracey Laird. So though I was raised by a fierce feminist and all her friends, my first real lesson that
This Is What A Feminist Looks Like
could be any damn way you please was through Dolly Parton 💖

If you missed our 2/12/26 panel with artists Sasha Stiles and Nathaniel Stern, moderated by critic Charlotte Kent, about creativity in the age of AI, here’s your chance to dive in.

Generations and Generativity: Post-AI Aesthetics in Practice is now available on YouTube. The panel explores the complexities, limitations, and material realities of human-machine collaborations, and emphasizes that engaging critically with AI means neither celebrating nor rejecting it outright, but asking better questions about how these technologies shape how we make, think, relate, model institutions, and imagine the future.

Check the link in our bio to access the video.

I got to write about resilience and the absurd, through the work of @marymattingly for an edited collection by Hannah Grayson published by @routledgebooks that is now finally out! Academic pubs take. A moment so it’s been a pleasure to add Hannah as a new colleague who saw my ideas through her wise editing ideas, to share our love of Todi, and visit in DC 🤩
I was frustrated why resilience seemed to become stagnant in political discourse— one must persist in a way of being as a way of showing resilience which is counter systems thinking understanding of the term. But also I had been musing on the following quite:
“Dwelling on the absurd thus offers a distinct analytical approach to questions of resilience and justice, one that can suspend categorical judgment – or the imposition of meaning onto social and environmental phenomena – and thus avoid potentially blinding applied and critical analyses to diverse practices of resilience and justice that fall outside artificially narrow analytical frameworks.[…] an attunement to absurd, seemingly nonsensical renderings and practices of resilience can bring to light new problems, and new responses, that potentially broaden the scope of resilience initiatives to advance justice goals“ (Grove et al 2023, 740).

So I remain yours ever absurdly bouncing through texts of various kinds, online and off, hither and thither, yet finding a way to go on without the how of that way being predetermined.
As I write in the essay…The naïveté of much discourse surrounding resilience stems from a presumption of stability, some assured future that will occur with just enough resilience. I worry that the rejection of resilience as a concept stems from the term’s application through policy initiatives and scholarly discourse, which simply allows those frameworks to become definitive, rather than resist-able. by @lucyscribbles
