We are proud to announce the publication of our Arts Council England (@aceagrams) National Lottery Grant funded anthology, What the Water Gave Us. Published by Takeaway Press @takeawaypress (with illustrations by its talented artist Oscar Price (@slimelad)) and edited by Elodie Barnes and Hannah Hutchings-Georgiou, What the Water Gave Us celebrates the stories and voices of women and non-binary writers from migrant backgrounds.

The anthology features thirteen personal essays and poems by writers from the platform and The Ruppin Agency Writers’ Studio, a foreword by Hannah Hutchings-Georgiou (@hannahhg25) and Elodie Barnes (@elodierosebarnes), and an afterword by The Ruppin Agency co-director and agent, Jonathan Ruppin.

Featuring beautiful original writing from Shirley Ahura @swizzbeatss), Susan Barker (@_sue_k_b), Jenny Chamarette (@jenny.chamarette), Yvonne Battle-Felton (@whyiwritebattlefelton), Selin Genc (@lady_hamilton_as_bacchante), Denise Rose Hansen (@drohansen), Emma Korantema Hanson (@emmakorantema), Claire Hynes (@_clairejhynes), So Mayer, Emily Midorikawa (@midorikawaemily), Yen Ooi (@yenooi), Shamini Sriskandarajah and Rojbîn Arjen Yiğit (@rojbinarjen), What the Water Gave Us plumbs the depths of migrant identity and positionality today.

The 2026 @lucycavendishcollege Florence Staniforth Student Fiction Prize is now open for entries. We’re so thrilled for Abigail Moss @abbyrmoss, one of our recent graduates, who won the prize in 2025 for her story ‘Contortions’!

Abigail Moss is a fiction writer and journalist based in London, whose fiction has appeared in Harper’s Bazaar @bazaaruk, Grazia @grazia and Mslexia @mslexia. She is currently working on her first novel.

On submitting to prizes, Abigail gave us one of her top tips: ’Get a few people to read your story and give feedback - they’re bound to notice things you didn’t, or point out things you might not have thought of! And even if you don’t incorporate all the feedback you’re given, thinking about why not is really useful too – it can help you think about your story in different ways’

Emma Korantema Hanson is a London-born and raised Ghanaian-British writer, multidisciplinary artist and formerly practising junior doctor. With bylines in Vogue Italia, The London Journal, Lucy Writers’ Platform and more, Emma has contributed to several Arts Council England funded projects as a writer, all while working on her two-time literary prize (Writers’ and Artists’ 2021, Morley College 2022) shortlisted first book.

For our upcoming ‘unusual’ music and poetry night and in collaboration with @lucywriters we have invited poet and writer Sabeen Chaudhry and we’re really looking forward to having her on the show. We’ll be at @referencepoint180 on 7 Sep. Tickets via @lipstomoon bio.

Sabeen Chaudhry writes poetry, theory and fiction. She has been published in magazines including Worms, Gutter and SPAM. She collaborates with artists, most recently for Singapore Biennale and with collectives like DEMO Moving Image, and co-edits Deleuzine. Her first collection, Rimming the Event Horizon, is forthcoming from The 87 Press.

Hannah Hutchings-Georgiou is a writer, editor and currently completing her PhD. "Nino Strachey’s Young Bloomsbury: A New Queer History offers a fascinating intervention that breathes life into a familiar narrative. Strachey casts her net wider than the familiar ‘Old Bloomsbury’ group headed up by Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, Clive Bell, and Lytton Strachey (a relation of Nino Strachey’s), introducing readers to lesser-known ‘Young Bloomsbury’ acolytes and associates. Her intergenerational approach is refreshing and makes for a lively, voluble read. By drawing on her family archive – along with correspondence, bequests, and forgotten novels – Strachey maps an intergenerational network that not only fostered a supportive environment for its younger members, but also re-energised its elders..."

so I switch

to see what it’s like when I take them as mine

and the pain moves up through my spine,

across my shoulders, like the boulder but sharper,

lighter. The ghost of a touch.'

Catherine Norris (@marbleplayground) exquisitely captures the intimate bodily nature of loss and joy, pleasure and pain across four poems. If in ‘Motion’ the memorable feelings of hurt and grief slip between tenses, then in ‘Oceanic’ pleasure unspools moment by moment, and the magical knowledge of life on earth expands star by star.

'In Suzuki’s futures, characters oscillate between excessive emotions and passivity. Whether this is anger, longing for love, or total disconnection, these people are often surveilled and subjected to intervention by shady organisations. Yet the government and other various magical or intergalactic bureaucracies are seldom the focus of the story. Rather, they are omnipresent but impenetrable, which doesn’t stop them from regulating, pathologising, and experimenting on the general populace.'

The second English-language publication of Izumi Suzuki’s short stories (@versobooks) delves deeper into the politics of feeling and the future’s dark underbelly, writes Jennifer Brough (@occultpain).
