GRON SPACE, 2023 Furniture for Landscape Architecture Studio & Plant Store We undertook the construction of the furniture of the @gron_landscape_design workspace. MATERIALITIES IN FLOW RESIDENCY PROGRAM 003 - MYCELIUM BASED COMPOSITES GROW - CHANGING THE PROCESS Mycelium-based composite materials offer a different approach to fabrication. Instead of shaping a material through purely mechanical processes, they use biological growth as part of the material-making process. Mycelium is the network of thread-like structures produced by fungi. As it grows through a substrate, it can bind loose organic particles together, forming a lightweight, porous composite. In the residency experiments and different substrates — including sawdust, straw, paper, and coffee grounds — were combined with mycelium to explore how composition, growth conditions, and processing affect the resulting material. Additional ingredients such as clay, flour, wax, and plaster were introduced to modify its structure, density, surface, strength, and behaviour. Material properties emerged through the interaction of biological growth, material composition, environmental conditions, and fabrication processes. MATERIALITIES IN FLOW RESIDENCY PROGRAM #002 - BIOPLASTICS & FIBER COMPOSITES TRANSFORM - MATERIALS THAT CHANGE, ADAPT & RETURN In series #002 of the residency, the research shifted towards materials that can be produced from natural polymers and recycled or organic raw ingredients. Starch, gelatin, and agar were combined with glycerin and water to produce bioplastic films and forms. In parallel, pulped paper, hemp, cotton, and wool were combined with different binders and aggregates to develop fiber-based composites. Changes in composition directly affect the material’s properties — its flexibility, fracture behaviour, transparency, weight, and formability. Rather than selecting a ready-made material to construct an object, we explored how the material’s properties can become part of the design process. Material becomes a medium for experimentation. *** Bioplastics are materials made partly or entirely from biological sources such as starch, cellulose, gelatin, or other natural polymers. Unlike conventional plastics, which are typically derived from fossil-based feedstocks, bioplastics can be produced from renewable organic materials and can be formulated to achieve different mechanical, optical, and tactile properties. *** Fibre-based composites are composite materials made by combining natural, recycled, or textile fibres with mineral- or bio-based binders, and, where appropriate, aggregates or other additives. MATERIALITIES IN FLOW RESIDENCY PROGRAM #001 - ECOLOGICAL MORTARS RECOMPOSE - ALTERING THE RECIPE Ecological mortars became one of the residency’s key fields of experimentation, exploring how the composition of a conventional building material can be redesigned through locally sourced raw materials and alternative ingredients. Clay, bentonite, kaolin, ash, and hydraulic lime were used as binders, combined with sand, gravel, pumice, perlite, and marble powder. Straw, paper, fabric, sawdust, and other natural aggregates were also introduced into the experiments. The materials’ character emerges through the balance of their ingredients, the behaviour of the mix, and even its failures - each revealing new possibilities for how materials can be designed, adapted, and used. Mortar is not a given product. It is a design variable. Ecological mortars are low-impact building mixes made from natural minerals and earth-based materials, combined with aggregates and water. They offer an alternative to conventional cement-based mortars by using local resources, low-energy processing, and material compositions adapted to specific contexts. Properties: Breathable, low-energy, repairable, and responsive to local conditions Raw Materials - Ingredients: earth- and mineral-based materials, plant-based additives, natural aggregates, waste materials Applications: surface finishes - coatings, wall systems, building materials, small-scale fabrication of objects. ΕΚΘΕΣΗ RESIDENCY - ΥΛΙΚΟΤΗΤΕΣ ΣΕ ΡΟΗ 17-30 Σεπτεμβρίου, @goetheinstitut_athen –< Εγκαίνια 17 Σεπτεμβρίου, 18:00-21:00 –> Είσοδος ελεύθερη ΑΡΧΑΙΟΛΟΓΙΕΣ ΤΟΥ ΜΕΛΛΟΝΤΟΣ Η έκθεση συγκεντρώνει έργα δέκα δημιουργών που προέκυψαν κατά τη διάρκεια του 6μηνου residency που εντάσσεται στο έργο «Υλικότητες σε Ροή», μιας πρωτοβουλίας της ομάδας LUDD σε συνεργασία με το Εργαστήριο Χημείας και Τεχνολογίας Υλικών του ΕΚΠΑ. Τα εκτιθέμενα αντικείμενα δεν λειτουργούν ως ολοκληρωμένα έργα, αλλά ως τεκμήρια μιας διαδικασίας διερεύνησης της ύλης – ίχνη μιας πρακτικής όπου η ύλη (μύκητες, βακτήρια, οργανικά υπολείμματα) δεν αποτελούν παθητικό μέσο, αλλά αποκτούν δημιουργική αυτενέργεια. Η έκθεση απορρίπτει τις κυρίαρχες αφηγήσεις για την ανάπτυξη, την καινοτομία και τον σχεδιασμό υπέρ μιας οντολογίας της συνάντησης και της συμβίωσης. Δεν πρόκειται για έκθεση οριστικών νοηματοδοτήσεων, αλλά για πεδίο συλλογικού στοχασμού πάνω στην εφήμερη, μεταβαλλόμενη φύση της ύλης – και, δι' αυτής, της ίδιας της γνώσης. ΤΟ ΠΕΡΙΔΡΟΜΙΟ ΣΤΑ ΠΡΟΣΦΥΓΙΚΑ Την Τετάρτη 18/03, 11:00-18:00, μέσα από ένα συμμετοχικό εργαστήριο σχεδιασμού και κατασκευής θα μετατρέψουμε το Περιδρόμιο σε κινητό infopoint, σύμφωνα με τις ανάγκες της Κοινότητας Κατειλημμένων Προσφυγικών Λεωφόρου Αλεξάνδρας. Το Περιδρόμιο είναι ένα κινητό αστικό έπιπλο το οποίο εξυπηρετεί κοινωνικοπολιτιστικές δράσεις στον δημόσιο χώρο. Απευθύνεται σε τοπικές κοινότητες, ανεξάρτητες πρωτοβουλίες κατοίκων και άτυπες δημιουργικές ομάδες επεκτείνοντας τα εργαλεία που έχουν στη διάθεσή τους και κατά συνέπεια το πεδίο δράσης και τη σφαίρα επιρροής τους. 🔍 Relic, 2025
Πάνος Προφήτης (@panosprofitis) & Μανώλης Λεβεδιανός (Ludd - @ludd_lab) Ξύλο σε CNC, 48εκ. x 47εκ. x 89εκ. Παραχώρηση των καλλιτεχνών και της γκαλερί Breeder (@the_breeder_gallery). Το έργο Relic γεννήθηκε από τη σύγκλιση μνήμης, τεχνολογίας και συλλογικού σχεδιασμού. Στον πυρήνα του, μια ξυλόγλυπτη κασέλα του Λουκά Προφήτη (1980s), σκαλισμένη με σκυριανά μοτίβα και μυθική εικονογραφία. Η συνεργασία εστιάζει στη μετάβαση από το χειροποίητο στο ψηφιακό.
Μέσα από την τρισδιάστατη σάρωση και την ψηφιακή κατασκευή, το αντικείμενο μετασχηματίζεται σε ένα ατομικό κάθισμα — ένα υβριδικό artefact με εγχάρακτη μνήμη. Το έργο διερευνά την ανοιχτή σχεδιαστική πρακτική ως ρέουσα, συλλογική συνέχεια της λαϊκής τέχνης — όχι ως παγωμένη παράδοση, αλλά ως ενεργή πολιτισμική αφήγηση. 🪑 Το Relic δεν είναι απλώς φόρος τιμής. Relic emerges from the convergence of memory, technology, and collective design. At its core, a hand-carved chest by Loukas Proφιτισ (1980s), etched with Skyrian patterns and mythic underwater imagery. The collaboration explores the shift from handcrafted to digital, from the shared-static to the functional-individual.
Through digital fabrication, fragments of the scanned object are reimagined as a personal seat — a hybrid artifact inscribed with traces of its origin. The work examines open design as a fluid, communal evolution of folk art — not as fixed tradition, but as living cultural practice. 🪑 Relic is not merely a tribute.
