Der dokKa-Preis des SWR für die ausgezeichnete Hördokumentation geht an Ludwig Berger @ludwig__berger für sein Feature „Im Ohr der Landschaft – die Künstlerin Josephine Dickinson", das am 22. Mai um 15:05 Uhr auf SWR Kultur ausgestrahlt wird.

Die Jury wurde durch Jurate Braginaite vertreten. Karin Hutzler vom SWR freute sich über den Preis für Ludwig Berger der leider nicht vor Ort war.

Berger verschränkt O-Töne, Field Recordings und Texte der tauben Dichterin Josephine Dickinson, die dank eines Cochlea-Implantats das Hören neu entdeckt hat, zu einem atmosphärischen Künstlerinnenporträt. Das Feature lädt dazu ein, in Dickinsons intime, multisensuelle Hörwelt einzutauchen und zugleich das eigene Hören zu hinterfragen. Die Jury würdigt eine Arbeit, die zu einer Langsamkeit einlädt, durch die achtsames Zuhören erst möglich wird – eine Fähigkeit, die in Zeiten von Reizüberflutung und politischer Spaltung wichtiger ist denn je.

In der dokKa Jury für die ausgezeichnete Hördokumentation waren dieses Jahr: Jurate Braginaite @wauwau_wangwang, Marita Stocker @maritastocker und Fabian Tietke. Dankeschön!

🧊 ¿Cómo suena un glaciar?⁣ Esta pregunta motivó al artista Ludwig Berger (@ludwig__berger) a desarrollar su proyecto «Crying Glacier»⁣, una crónica de una relación íntima entre el oyente y el glaciar Morteratsch.

En Las Naves disfrutamos de la proyección del documental de Lutz Stautner que registra la práctica de escucha profunda que hizo Ludwig en el glaciar. Una pieza que nos muestra cómo a medida que el hielo se rinde ante el calor, revela un vocabulario espléndido e intrincado.

🗯️ Ludwig conversó sobre ello con el ambientólogo Andreu Escrivà (@andreu_escriva).

La instalación sonora en torno al proyecto que pudimos ver en @lasnavescollab permitió que el glaciar habitara la sala, convirtiendo sus vibraciones en una presencia física que conecta al espectador con la vulnerabilidad de la Tierra.⁣

Our project “Crying Glacier” is now part of the Paläontologische Landesausstellung Nordrhein-Westfalen „überLeben in der Eiszeit“ (About Life in the Ice Age) at the Ruhr Museum on the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site. The exhibition combines scientific findings with a highly topical social issue and reveals how closely nature, climate and humanity are interwoven. Inside the old coal bunker the spinning vinyl of @ludwig__berger and the images of Morteratsch Glacier create an audiovisual experience of the melting glacial landscape. Based in Zurich, sound artist Ludwig Berger spent years documenting the "inner sounds" of Switzerland’s Morteratsch Glacier for his project, Crying Glacier.

These "cries" turn abstract climate data into a visceral reality, forcing us to listen to a landscape that is literally melting away.

While sound captures the glaciers' present, the melting ice is also revealing a hidden past. Their ice holds an important record of past climate and environment. And its melt is causing the irreversible loss of these unique archives of history.

It is my most personal piece to date. My radio documentary "Das Hellhörige Haus" is an acoustic farewell to my childhood home.

The house stands in an Alsatian village. Through thin walls and wooden floorboards, every sound passes: woodpeckers, air traffic, church bells down in the village, the hum in the electrical cabinet, and wood pigeons on the TV antenna.

After both parents have died, I returned during the summer to document what remains: listening to old family cassettes and recording the current inhabitants—wasps in the attic, cats at the shed, and deer in the garden.

Arranged alphabetically from Ausatmen (Exhaling) to Zyklus (Cycle), an acoustic farewell alphabet emerges: 21 sound miniatures of a house that will soon be emptied and sold. An autoethnographic inventory of a domestic ecosystem, told through field recordings, family archives, and spoken text.

Available now in the ARD Audiothek and all major podcast platforms. (For now, only a German version exists).

“Sonic Investigations“ has closed its journey at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.
Over seven months, the Luxembourg Pavilion invited visitors to close their eyes and experience space through sound. The immersive installation welcomed 67,267 visitors, contributing to a remarkable 315,584 attendees overall.
This collective exploration highlighted the importance of sensorial approaches in the understanding of spaces and territories.

The vinyl “Ecotonalities: No Other Home Than the In-Between“ is now out. It echoes the exhibition that has recently closed.

Composed by Ludwig Berger as the centre piece of the Luxembourg Pavilion, this sonic work gathers field recordings across Luxembourg, offering a sensorial reading of shifting territories and transforming landscapes. In the composition, Berger reconstructed these experiences in a process of place-remaking.

Inspired by Basalt’s life, writings and “sonic imprint” theory, Pablo Diserens and Ludwig Berger put Basalt’s thinking and methodologies into practice. The duo followed these aphorisms like a map, listening to the Onsernone Valley and recording the sounds it fostered. As time passed, the landscape unveiled itself differently, and the parallels with Basalt’s experience grew. Sounds became palpable while the boundaries between the two artists and the world blurred. Out of this attempt to bring Basalt’s philosophy back to life, Pablo Diserens and Ludwig Berger created a counter-cartography of the valley’s soundscape, tracing the effects and interrelations of its sonic imprints. Together, the album and Basalt’s writings enact a psychogeographical gesture that urges listeners to reimagine their relationship with the world around them.

Here some documentation of the recording process, the search for Basalt amid the insect people, and the premiere of the duo’s audiovisual performance at @eventiletterarimonteverita

Pablo Diserens is a field recordist and artist devoted to listening practices, non-human realities, and possible forms of interspecies coexistence. Rooted in ecological engagement and site-specificity, their work emphasizes listening as an act of presence and permeation for a radical planetary interrelation.

Ludwig Berger is an artist, musician, and educator whose work focuses on the sonic and vibratory dimensions of landscapes. He explores how places and species become audible, with particular attention to small-scale and often inaudible processes such as insect communication, plant rhythms, and glacial melting.

It is said that Basalt (1910 - ?) settled in the Onsernone Valley in the 1950s where they developed their "sonic imprint" hypothesis emerging from a singular methodology of listening. The core principle of their theory was the belief that sound leaves measurable traces in the matter it comes into contact with. Consequently, Basalt spent the rest of their life using their body as a sound recording device in the hopes of creating a sonic archive through their skeleton. In the end, nobody knows exactly what happened to Basalt. Some speculate that they joined what they called the insect people, their body never to be found.
