Seriality, and the rhythm between the works, are concerns shared by both Dima Mykytenko and Victoria Pidust. Although these two series belong to different exhibitions, they still somehow echo one another.
Both revolve around a very specific landscape diffused into abstraction. Both avoid the direct representation of place, leaving enough space for interpretation and for our own perception to inhabit the work.

Try to remember that special melancholic blue in Valeria Troubina’s paintings. Now, once again, imagine the dense layer of time covering Volodymyr Budnikov’s works dedicated to Crimea. Then return to the gallery and look more closely at the velvety film grain of Yaroslav Solop’s photographs from Eternal Return.

Don’t you have the feeling that this velvety quality somehow flows between works from different exhibitions? Each of them functions independently, yet in imaginary proximity they complement one another and create a very particular relation.

____________________________________

In both editions of “Odesa, Texas”, meaning emerges within liminal spaces: between individual works in the exhibition, as well as on a broader scale. With less than a month remaining until the exhibition closes, we decided to reveal some of the hidden connections between the two editions.
“A Sense of Place”, explored in the opening room of the first edition, finds a kind of continuation in “Odesa, Texas Up Close”, where it returns as a “Sense of Time”. The desire to tame memories of home thus comes to resemble a Parthian shot: a bitter awareness of the impossibility of returning to our happy memories.

Our final book recommendation for “Odesa, Texas: Up Close” is also the most obvious one. Not only because the book’s editor-in-chief is @yaroslav_solop, co-curator of our exhibition. And not only because, among many others, it features works by Victoria Pidust. Perhaps slightly because it is the most well-thumbed book in our library. But above all because “UPHA Made in Ukraine” is a truly unique publication devoted to an equally unique phenomenon in Ukrainian contemporary art — the Ukrainian Photographic Alternative. The quintessence of photographic alternative gathered into a single 600-page volume. Come by and leaf through it. Today, the book is practically impossible to find for sale.

Сьогодні знайти цю книжку у продажу вже практично неможливо. taken in LU Galleries by @lugalleries

Revealing a new, ephemeral work that has surfaced on the gallery walls. Everything here is in constant flux. Even the exhibition itself.

Just realized we have a sunrise in one room and a set of sunsets in another.
That’s it.

It is only logical to recommend one of the most significant books on photography in the context of this show, since we do have a lot of photography here. Yet, why not try to apply those ideas beyond photography? “Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography” is a philosophical book by French theorist Roland Barthes, published in 1980. Rather than presenting a systematic history of photography, Barthes investigates what makes a photograph emotionally and ontologically different from other images. Among many other things, Barthes introduces the ideas of studium and punctum. And the latter one is something we would love you to explore a little further. For Barthes, punctum is the unexpected detail that “pierces” or “wounds” the viewer. It may be a gesture, an object, a light, an apparently insignificant detail that produces a deeply personal reaction. Don’t know about you, but we see (or rather feel) a few punctums throughout this exhibition. Even “Sunrise Over an Unknown Hospital” has one, despite not being a photograph.
The Ukrainian edition of Camera Lucida by @moksop_museum comes highly recommended by us.

Українське видання «Camera Lucida» від @moksop_museum однозначно займає своє місце на полицях нашої бібліотеки. taken in LU Galleries by @lugalleries

The memory of a traumatic event rarely remains whole. Fragments, repetitions, and gaps shape its structure as we experience it. @olha.henda and @bilyk_ksenia approach these fragments of memory, attempting to domesticate them. Bilyk weaves the wool to gradually claim (and tame) the Soviet part of our history. She portrays a building which is uniform and quite imposing. Here, each pass of the thread becomes an act of reclamation. The building remains legible, yes, but its authority collapses strand by strand. Similarly, Olha Henda works with memory by stripping away everything nonessential to the vital trace. Her lines seem to materialise feelings that cannot be fully expressed in words. Mark by mark, repeating the same gesture, the artist relives the moment, freeing herself from fear, doubt, and hesitation. Recording her memory of the here and now.

This work depicts a deliberately ambiguous example of Soviet architecture. For many Ukrainians, the image feels uncannily familiar, not because it represents a specific place, but because it evokes a place from their own past. Here, it speaks above all to an unsettling, bittersweet memory of spaces that were, to some extent, imposed on us. At the same time, the handmade nature of the work seems to ‘tame’ this troubling image. The slow process of weaving softens the building’s institutional character. In this way, a generalised architectural form gradually becomes an intimate object of memory.
@bilyk_ksenia

“There is little point in writing my thoughts down on paper, even though I still do it. Over time, my understanding of the truth and my own words changes so profoundly that, in the future, I am more likely to recognise what I once felt not through the words, but through these marks.
Letters to the Future are thoughts that have not yet found their words, but already need to be remembered. In time, we may forget them, yet the body and the subconscious will preserve their trace. They are difficult to articulate because fear and shame often prove stronger than language” @olha.henda
