We are so proud and grateful to share that @lugyah_la has been awarded a Bib Gourmand by the Michelin Guide. This recognition belongs to our whole team and to the generations of Zapotec tradition that live in every dish we make. We can’t wait to keep cooking, keep sharing, and keep bringing a taste of that history to every guest who walks through our door!” by @lugyah_la

Lugya’h is now featured in Michelin’s updated guide to California and Los Angeles!

With an image of Lugya’h’s Turkey Mole as the hero image of the announcement, Lugyah’s specific listing reads as follows:

Chef Alfonso Martinez’s tlayudas are the star of the show at Lugya’h, tucked inside Los Angeles’s Maydan Market. It’s a food market, so expect a casual experience where you’ll order at the counter and find a seat, but do come hungry, as the portions are hearty. You can also expect a bit of a show, as the hand-pressed tortillas are cooked in comals over a live fire. Filled with beans, cheese, shaved cabbage and salsa, they’re exceptionally well prepared. Add protein, especially their standout moronga (blood sausage), and it’s easily a meal for two.

Thank you to the customers who have come been with us since day one ! A special thanks to our Lugyah team that made it possible ! by @lugyah_la

Traditional dancing is also a source of resilience for us, a moment of joy: Bén biliaab (from Santo Domingo Albarradas) and bén gashon (from Zoogocho). It goes hand in hand with our food; when we dance, we eat certain foods as part of the celebration. That is why, when we share the food our ancestors passed down with you, @lugyah_la, it comes from our hearts and is full of love ❤️ long live indigenous peoples. #ponchostlayudas #indigenouspeople #indigenouspeoplesday by @lugyah_la

Gratitude to all the indigenous ancestors who made it possible for us to be here, and to all the land and water protectors who are currently on the front lines of resistance. Thank you for your continued protection of the corn; because of you all, we at Lugyah can share sacred heirloom corn with you. Long live the indigenous people. #ponchostlayudas #indigenouspeople #ponchostlayudas #indigenouspeoplesday #indigenousfood by @lugyah_la

I recently visited Lugya’h inside Maydan Market to sit down with Chef Poncho and hear the story behind the food, his Oaxacan roots, and even the meaning behind the restaurant’s name.

@lugyah_la is the evolution of @ponchostlayudas , and the name comes from Zapotec, referring to the “face and heart of the plaza” — inspired by the communal markets of Oaxaca’s highlands.
And you can feel that idea in the food:
The fire. The comal. The handmade tortillas. The flavors that connect Oaxaca to Los Angeles.

And then there was the food. 😍
🔥 Tlayudas
🫓 Memelas
🍳 Comal-cooked eggs
🥣 Traditional atole

Everything felt like the kind of food you’re supposed to share around a table — which is exactly why I love stories like this.

This is another chapter of The Stories We Eat, where I’m going beyond the plate to meet the people and stories behind Latino food in Southern California. Happy #hispanicheritagemonth

A little piece of @ponchostlayudas kitchen, ready for your table. 🔥

Lugya’h’s Supper Club brings a new chef’s tasting menu to your home each month, inspired by the seasons, the Sierra Norte, and the recipes and traditions Chef Alfonso “Poncho” Martinez grew up with.

Think live-fire comal cooking, generations-old recipes, and Zapotec dishes you won’t find on our regular menu. Just heat, plate, and enjoy a meal made with care, right at home.

Menus are intentionally limited and made exclusively for supper club members.
