I’ve always loved taking pictures of writings on the wall, tags, drawings, whatever it was, but I find that the ones I saw when I lived in Madrid were not as original, or as charged of some kind of meaningful innocence, as some of the ones I see here, mostly walking around Schaerbeek, my neighborhood. Or maybe it’s only the “immigrant way of looking” at a new place you can almost call home but it’s still not, a mix of exoticization and contrasted nostalgia. Or that the grit the walls grow here because of all the rainfall they endure throughout the whole year adds layers of flavor to the chalk composing the writings. Because a lot of them are done with chalk! Not even alcohol pens or specialized graffiti markers of any kind, cheap or expensive, but simple chalk, as if we were living in the 1930s. Kids here do a lot of “rayuela” (“marelle” in french, “hopscotch” in english), the other day I took a photo of a 40 square one chalked on the floor.
Not far from my house the writing “Nique les flice” has been remade over and over with chalk and white paint since I came to live here in 2021, and probably since before (you can find that one some posts ago). I don’t post all the graffitis I photograph and the many times I take a picture of the same one, of course, but I can assure you it’s an obsession, not a very original one, but it makes me happy. As the dogs, the couples/trouples/quatruples in trotinette, and so many other photographer’s little fixations.
Anyway, it’s so fun having rolls of film cryosleeping in your fridge for months and developing them all at once to find things you didn’t even remember. And this first picture is, even as simple as it is, one of my favorites of these past years. It says “We are the☀️, and you /plural, ‘vous’/ are the 🌙”, but the second sentence is written over, or under, with yellow chalk so the first letter of the “you” (V of “vous”) might be read as a N, resulting in “We are the☀️, and we are the 🌙”.

Maybe I like the picture because of all that philosophy books I’ve read with its cases of reference/meaning of “the Morning Star is the Evening Star” and “Venus is Venus”. Don’t know. taken in Belgium by @luhidalmen

🏮 A la hora de positivar en el laboratorio, esta película va a ser un gusto.
