Out now! Tania Franco Klein: Mercado de Sonora

In a space where spiritual objects and desires transcend class barriers, where promises to bridge the social divides of Mexico are sold, the Mercado de Sonora offers more than mere products for sale. The underground is brought to street-level in a marketplace where exotic animal sales are permissible and serums and soaps allege to exorcise societal ills. These illicit sales and proclaimed panaceas reveal and reflect the political corruption and social, structural faults of a consumerist society always in need of quick fixes.

Part book, part installation, this unique accordion fold-out opens a window into scenes of the occult, imagined through Franco Klein’s cinematic eye.

I wrote about @aminyosefi ‘s ‘Eyes Dazzle as They Search for the Truth’ for ‘Map of Maps’, the inaugural issue of @september_projects - which we’ve just received advance copies for and is beginning to make its way out into the world after a year and a half of work alongside my co-editors @andrea_orejarena @rain.ykc and designer @brianpaullamotte . Amin re-photographed images made by other photographers in the 1979 Iranian revolution, using a magnifying loupe to hone in on the people in the crowds who were looking directly at the photographers. I wrote: To magnify an image is to walk straight into Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up. In the 1966 film, a photographer wanders through a park, photographs a couple, and later suspects his negatives contain evidence of a murder. In his darkroom, he rephotographs and enlarges the prints again and again. As the details become larger, the photographer doubts himself, until he no longer knows what he has seen. One might expect magnification would reveal more than what the naked eye can see; in reality, it exposes strangeness. At close range, the familiar turns uncanny. It’s like repeating the word ‘looking’ until it ceases to be language and becomes sound.
It was a pleasure to spend time looking carefully at this work, which was also just published by @luhz.press @zoelem with a text by @davidcampany and will be included in @sascha_ray ‘s ‘Fever Dream’ group show - also all about archives - opening @palogallery on October 9th from 6-8pm. by @luhz.press

Eyes Dazzle as They Search for the Truth di @aminyosefi pubblicato da @luhz.press

I nostri migliori auguri!!

128 pagine in carta naturale Burano Grey e 16 pagine in Arena Ivory Smooth.

“Re-photographing the images through a magnifying loupe and extracting these faces became, for me, an allegory for bringing the Revolution into the present. The loupe acted as a bridge, connecting me to the revolutionaries of the past.

It seems that their gazes have been waiting for my eyes for decades, filtering through a multitude of lenses and eyes before reaching me. Perhaps they wanted to be recorded in history by a camera, and I tried to honour their desire for immortality.” - @aminyosefi

‘Eyes Dazzle as They Search for the Truth,’ the first photobook by @aminyosefi, with an essay by @davidcampany is out now!

In Eyes Dazzle as They Search for the Truth, Iranian artist Amin Yousefi rephotographs images from the 1979 Iranian Revolution, isolating moments when protesters direct their gaze through the lens and toward the viewer. Through the curved halo of a magnifying loupe, Yousefi revisits this monumental time in his nation’s history as he examines the relationship between photographer and subject, reversing the role of the image-maker.

Featuring texts by David Campany and Amin Yousefi, the book examines gaze in its many forms: the relationship between a photographer and their subject; state surveillance of protest movements; and a viewer’s perception of the past, mediated through a halftone matrix.
