@thechainsmokers & @winonaoak - Love is Kind EP Visualizers Stoked to have gaffed all these visualizers over the course of three days. First time working with a robot arm. 🦾 Was a great collaboration between camera, VFX, production design, everyone involved. Main Set-Up: 12x12 Overhead Softbox with magic cloth (skirted); Nanlux 2400B and 1200B open face inside for key. Godox F400R on 16’ Menace Arm to wheel around for rim light or wrap as needed. Bleached Muslin floppy to double break the overhead softbox (or F400R) for close-ups. Titans and bounce cards on the ground for fill as needed. For certain visualizers, we used MC Pros and Nanlite 60CRs with spotlights. @mlb x @mitchellandness - Deion Sanders ‘97 Fun, nostalgic commercial on film! Always happy to bust out the light meter for projects on film. Main Set-Up: Nanlux 600C thru 8x8 Half-Silent Grid (very dim), 150CR w/ 36° Spotlight & Leaf Gobo for back wall texture. 60CR w/ 19° Spotlight for ping on middle ground, camera left elements. Titan tube for ping on middle ground, camera right elements. Godox F400R set 10,000k for a subtle blue lift in the shadows & ambiance. MC Pros with @small_footlighting ’s MC Sockets on the practical for full control over the shade’s exposure (the one facing the back-wall was quite dim). For the exterior night baseball field, we used a Nanlux 1200B bare face running off an Ecoflow, with a Titan Tube and beadboard for fill. The output and 120° native beam spread really hero’d for that scene. The Smashing Machine - Press Junket for @a24 & @kodak_shootfilm Had the privilege to light some legends, and listen in on them talk about their craft. 🔨 Set-Up: (2) 8x8 Booklights on both sides of the cameras for keys; Hudson Spider boomed overhead for a backlight; LiteMats & Titans to evenly expose the 20x20 backdrop (and adjust color to taste by changing the Titans & LiteMats temps). 650w Tungsten dimmed all the way down for practical and subtle edge. For some scenes we added a 4x4 floppy to the camera right book light to reduce glare on the glasses. Prod. @summersmash & @lyricalemonade - THE BEST WEEKEND OF YOUR LIFE I love 20,000K; when I first got my Sekonic C800 color meter, I stepped outside during blue hour, and took a reading: 30,000 kelvin. It’s such a calm, comforting color for me. Not every light is capable of such a high kelvin, but thankfully the Nanlux 150Cs are. Not every occasion calls for such a high kelvin, but space certainly does. It gave the color cast for space that we wanted, without having to dip into an HSI color mode. Set-Up: (2) 150Cs @ 20,000K into an 8x8 Ultra Bounce through the spaceship’s viewport for the key light. A 2x3 and 18x24 solid were used on the viewport to flag the 8x8 UB to taste, often upstaging talent for a more dramatic fall off, or to slow the background down. We taped (4) metal plates to the ceiling for the (4) MC Pros to magnetize onto. We used the (4) MC Pros as the spaceship’s work lights. We had a 5th MC Pro for an eye light for certain coverage, and a pizza box for fill for certain coverage. We used @blackoutlighting for Min to program the lighting gags to taste. One of the 150s gave a static space ambiance, while the other was pulsing for the beginning chase sequence to give the feeling talent was flying through space. @remitly - Family Secrets For this shoot, we had to film three different scenes, in four different languages, with different talent. We also had to bounce between setups because of scheduling. For that reason, it was important to keep the lighting as consistent as possible, and to minimize the amount of setup/teardown. To do that, we built and left as many units as we could in place for the full day. For the living room and kitchen scene, the only unit we had to set up and tear down was our F400Bi thru a 6x6 Magic Cloth (our main key for the kitchen scene). Whenever new talent stepped in, we could quickly tailor the lighting to their unique features and positioning. Every department coordinated closely with one another; we all knew what was next on the agenda, and could flag any inconsistencies. The result was a great, efficient day. 😎 Main Set-Up: 1200B and 600C through windows, Nova 600 thru 8x8 Magic Cloth for main living room key. 400X into CRLS 50cm No. 2 for back wall texture. Pavoslim 2x1 for fill. Beadboard and CRLS 50cm No. 3 for passive fill. Godox F400Bi thru 6x6 Magic Cloth for main kitchen key. Lots of solids for negative fill, and a 20’ solid to control the sun’s spill on the front side of the house. MC Pros heroed in the kitchen for the stove light and island practical (rigged via an MC Socket). @yg feat. @paygotti.1500 - Gang Bizness First big thank you to Art Department for the stellar set build, and how easy they made it for G&E. @jes21caning asked in pre-production if we wanted the fluorescent housings to be 4’ long, or a custom dimension. Since Titan Tubes are 3’4” wide, she had her team make the fluorescent housings exactly to spec so it would read the best it could on camera. Her team also had beams installed above the fluorescent housings that made it a breeze for G&E to zip tie all twelve Titan Tubes to. Second shoutout to G&E for their due diligence; Mike, Grey, and I were the selected members for the pre-light day. The rest of G&E joined us for the shoot day, where they also had to set up the movers; they successfully tore down all three of our setups before location went into OT. Main Set-Up: (12) Titan Tubes rigged overhead for the fluorescents (strobed via the Astera App). Nanlux 600c w/ 4’ Octagonal Softbox & Grid to lift principal talent from the crowd. The OctaDome’s shallow depth allowed the crane and cast/crew more freedom to move around. (2) Nova 600s into the white cyc behind the crane for a big, soft ambient frontal fill. Black Void Set-Up: 8x8 Overhead Softbox with quarter silent grid (skirted); Godox F400R and Godox F400Bi open face inside for key. A Nanlux 1200B w/ Light Dome 150 camera left, and a Nanlux 600c w/ 4’ Octagonal Softbox camera right, for frontal fills/keys. (6) Movers were rigged overhead on the truss. @thinkwithmark - For Ideas Worth Keeping Really loved the look we came up with for this commercial. Commercials with a narrative-focused undertone, with scenes that feel ripped from a feature, are some of my favorite to work on. Main-Set Up: Pavoslim 60CLs w/ Grids were our main key lights for the shoot. I like to think of them as a poor-man’s Helios Lightsock, but that I can run off an APEX 360Wh V-Mount Battery all day (which is exactly what we did; we had them on 5-15% brightness for most of the shoot, and it lasted two full days without a charge). The Pavoslim 120C and Nanlux 150C provided a cooler ambiance for our shadows. Titans w/ grids were used as kickers or fill. The MC Sockets w/ MC Pros have also been my go-to for practicals whenever I can swing it. I love being able to control the intensity of the front and back of lamp shades independently. The grips used visqueen, floppies, 8x8 and 12x12 solids, and scrap duvetyne to black out every inch of the house for full control. @boy__smells - Vanillamace Campaign (feat. @vanillamace ) Playful, analogue-inspired campaign shot on DVCAM. ⭐️📹 Main-Setup: 12x12 Quarter Silent Grid Book-Light. Nanlux 2400B and Nanlux 1200B w/ 30° dishes for the punch to deliver us the stop we needed (F8). Nanlux 150C thru 4x4 Half-Soft Frost for edge. Pavoslim 240CL on standby for frontal fill as needed, and another to even out the exposure on the left side of the cyc wall. A Nova 600 was used for certain off-angle shots at a low percentage to even out the far right side of the cyc. MC Pro inside the floor practical. V-Flat camera left for some fill (sometimes switched to the black side for neg). For beauty ads, often you’d want a bounce card under the face as well, but JD opted for negative fill to sculpt and contour talent’s facial features (they were getting a bit lost in the close-ups with how large and soft our light source was). Great call. For the product shots, we used an F400R overhead, Titans and bounce cards for accents, and negative fill as needed to hide unwanted reflections. Occasionally a Nanlite 60CR w/ 19° Spotlight was used for a hard edge on the products. @yonasarahh - porcelain Main Set-Up: (2) F400s with skirts on 16’ menace arms for overhead key & ambiance. Titan into 2x3 Beadboard for fill on close-ups, and another on the chandelier to give it some information. When the Titan/Beadboard eye-light didn’t catch, we’d pivot to an MC Pro with a Bubble. 150C w/ Spotlight for hard back edge for speciality shots, and a Pavoslim 240C for a more aggressive fill for speciality shots. Floated a floppy around to kill background reflections. @clair_health - “Have It All” Set-Up: 1200X and 1200B through the windows for a sunset vibe (it was night outside). Pavoslim 240C thru 4x4 Unbleached Floppy for main key. Titan Dooplo for wrap, DMG Dash with Dot for eyelight, 150C for ambient lift, and pizza box for talent fill. These were our main units for the rest of the ad as well (along with MC Pros, Nova 600, and an F400R). Cetaphil Spec Ad - Starring @lilia & feat. @matt.stone57 It was pouring outside, but you wouldn’t know. ⛈️ We only had a half-day to get through two full scenes & setups—since the Nanlux 1200B is IP rated, I didn’t need to cover it, which was a big time saver. Key: 1200B thru a small window, largely covered by a 4x4 Magic Cloth for a soft key & room ambiance (some hard light crept through to give background texture). Pavoslim 120C thru a 2x3 Half-Silent Grid to extend the window wrap on talent. 60CR w/ 19° spotlight into a 15CM CRLS No. 2 for a nice highlight on the edge of the bed. MC Pro w/ bubble for an eye-light in the close-ups. 6x6 unbleached muslin t-boned camera right to suck up some of the green cast return from the green walls. Aveeno x TOGETHXR - The Strength Issue feat. @cameronbrink22 Solo multi-cam interview set-up! Evoke 1200B thru 8x8 Magic Cloth T-Bone for main key. Evoke 600C w/ Light Dome 150 for secondary key. (2) Pavoslim 240CLs with LCDs for hair lights. (1) 4x2 Flex Mat boomed overhead for top fill. Finally (2) Pavoslim 120Cs to help evenly expose the cyc behind talent. 

I had 3 hours for load-in & set-up, by myself (including the distro run, which was short). The Pavoslims really help with speed of set-up and tear down. The 240CLs’ punch was perfect for hair lights (powerful enough to play alongside our bright key lights). The 120Cs had enough spread, and good overhead, to fill in the cyc to taste. Every unit had its thickest diffusion option on for maximum softness.

Besides the 120Cs and the 4x2 Flex Mat, everything was running at, or close to, 100%. We were able to land at a F5.6/8 split on talent. DP: @macshoop
