Grief and Love

To love is to be changed. I’ve heard it said a million times, and it’s now finally clicking. Love and grief helped me evolve into someone with empathy, compassion, and a determination to succeed.

I let love and grief envelop me, and as it did, I felt this false sense of who I was disappear, and I felt whole. I felt as though everything was clearer and the fears I once had became something more, something worth handling, something worth processing.

I began to leap, to take risks, and to feel the love that this beautiful and chaotic world has to offer. My artistry improved; my life began.

I am forever grateful for grief, for love, for family, and friends. I am grateful for music, and I am so happy to celebrate my existence and my place in this chaotic but beautiful world.

Allow grief to change you, for you will not be the person you were before, but allow love to guide you to the person you are destined to become.

Dear 16-year-old Luis,

Hey, it’s me from the future! Here are some updates for you! You live past 16, you find the courage to come out as gay the year gay marriage is legalized. You move away from home, you experience other people like you, you meet strangers and they turn into friends, you take risks, you kiss guys, you flirt, you sing on stages and get paid. You also travel to big cities alone and become a defensive driver lol! All because you found the courage to be yourself! To be gay and loud, and live! It may seem impossible now but trust me, it’s worth it to stick around. Love is the foundation, love is not black and white it’s beautiful and full of color it’s free and bold. You have so much to look forward to.

I got to do this alongside some of the kindest and most wonderful friends ever! Thank you all for everything!

In getting this degree, I have done what feels like the impossible. In a 2021 study by the American Council on Education , 10.1% Hispanic/Latino students hold a master’s degree. 1.5%-2.5% of those students are Mexican. 49.6% is the average for white students. I proudly get to say that this Mexican American from a single-parent home who grew up in low-income housing was able to pursue a master’s degree for something they are truly passionate about! I am forever grateful to UNCO for allowing me to push past statistics and find who I am as an artist and as a student!

I hope to take this year off of education to gain more performance experience as well as build up some finances again! However, I am already excited to start applying to more programs to pursue a doctorate or artist diploma!

One last thing I want to say.

To any little brown kid stuck in a small town who feels like there is no way out. You can break past so much more than what you think. You have autonomy over your life; you get to choose what path you take. Whatever path you choose, do it with integrity, kindness, and do it afraid. The world is much bigger than you realize; you can do the impossible as long as you keep your heart in it.
