Four ski masks in an SUV

Voiceover written and spoken by me, ended by a poem from Hunter S. Thompson. Music by the one and only Shlohmo, whose music I always play before important events.

When I recorded the voiceover, it turned out different from what I actually wrote down because I winged it from memory. The original text was this:

Four ski masks in a blacked-out SUV. I look around the interior of the vehicle and over my shoulder, meeting my friends’ eyes. The varieties of color and distinctive eyelids blink back at me. All in uniform, blacked out in North Face, they sit there knowing the plan, and I can’t help but feel a sense of pride, bravely ready like soldiers, hungry as I am for battle. I look them in the eyes and wonder, where will we all eventually end up in the end? Will we have the privilege to know each other in old age, to hold each other’s children and smile back on nights of youth that filled our hearts with a sense of wonder? Will one of us meet a disgusting end, ripping his life from the hands of his friends without consent? Will we be able to survive everything life will throw at us? All our lives, we’ve marched into an unknown end.

Sam would say we’re misunderstood, but I’d say we’re a part of a dying breed. Eventually, none of this will be possible. It’s exactly why it’s important to do it now. There’s this feeling that nothing is going to save us or stop us. There’s this feeling that it’s all for now, and we’ll figure out the rest later, when it happens or if it does. by @lukashuber

A series of film photographs I ended up calling “Fucked Up Times.” That encapsulates my life growing up in Philadelphia. When I was making it, I just carried a small Canon film camera in my back pocket. I ended up documenting the things I saw every day: crime, graffiti, and beauty mixed in between. The small moments of triumph, mixed with moments of anger during my mom’s battle with cancer, which she ended up beating.

I never ended up releasing this website to the public. To this day, all I have to do is hit a button to make it live. by @lukashuber

Pieces of my sketchbook overlayed with video using double exposure. When I first exported this out of premiere pro, it broke the frames into this really choppy, chaotic bit. At first I didn’t really like it, but now overlooking my old work found it and started to really like it for some reason. by @lukashuber

Life will gnash its teeth at you. Just make sure you smile back. They hate you because they’re just dogs in a cage, and you simply existing is proof there’s a bigger life outside of the kennel. That’s not to say it’s not important to fight back, because at some point you will have to. You can love your enemy and destroy them at the same time. Don’t shrivel up in the face of adversity. Do not reduce your soul to make people comfortable.

Life makes a fool out of us one way or another, whether you wake up at 40 at a desk job you hate or people treat you like a court jester for being authentic. Eventually, you might as well do the thing that you care about or the thing that you lose sleep over and obsess over.

One thing I’ve noticed is that in the beginning, there’s only a few claps and dirty looks. Once you start to get some motion going, people start filling the stands and tell you, “I’ve always believed in you,” like they’ve always seen the bigger picture.

It’s not to say that you’re important because honestly, as individuals, we might not be that important. But as a collective, a collective consciousness, or humanity, we’re all working towards something. We’re all a gear in the engine or a drop in a vast ocean.

I think it’s important to create regardless of the outcome or what happens when it’s received. If it feeds your soul, then good. That’s not to say that it’s all sunshine and rainbows. There will be times you actually doubt yourself, even when you reach a success you thought you always wanted. There might be times where you bite off too much to chew as well.

I like to think of creativity like childhood. When we are kids, there’s no expectation of being absolutely great. You just color the wall with crayons and your mom is pissed.

I don’t think any of us are actually that great, but that’s not the point. That’s just the programming of the society around us.

You don’t have to be a constant engine pumping out work. That’s not the point either. If your soul is growing, then good. Maybe that’s the point. In this game of life, I don’t think there’s really one point. I think there’s multiple points. I think you kinda just learn that as you get older. by @lukashuber

The moments of our youth we held so highly,
the impending doom of adulthood slowly creeping through the years, getting bigger and more clouded.
Our youth, slowly fading into memories and photographs. The young men we were, criminals and misfits, outcasts in our own lives, groups formed between us, as well as feuds and petty conflicts, but mostly brotherhood. I look back at my years, and I smile. by @lukashuber

It’s okay to try things and fail by the way. Just make sure you come back swinging ten times harder. People will try to make you think it’s lame to put your work out there. Some of us just have no other way of doing so. Bravery is important. It will give you hope, and others too. by @lukashuber

I hope your soul rises above everything you don’t talk about. At my friends funeral’s everyone just talked about how they wish they spoke up. There’s always room for hope. Take care. by @lukashuber

Nobody tells you how quiet life gets when you realize you actually have nothing in common with most people. I don’t want to go out and party, I don’t want to numb myself or shut up or be distracted by noise. I just want to kick it with people focused on their craft and living as free and true to themselves as possible. The only people around me are passionate individuals.

I find the higher your soul climbs out of the dark and into the light, the more agents are sent after you to drag you back into the dark, even though you’ve earned your stay in the light.

Stop saying it’s not that deep. This shit got me feelin’ like Neo in The Matrix. by @lukashuber
