The freedoms our veterans swore an oath to defend should not become the very freedoms they are denied upon returning home.

At its heart, this case is about something far greater than disability benefits or government regulations.

It is about freedom.

The freedom to make your own decisions. To seek guidance from those you trust. To spend your own money obtaining assistance you believe will improve your life.

There is a profound irony in trusting our veterans to defend the Constitution on a battlefield, only to thereafter deny these warriors the freedoms guaranteed by the very same Constitution they fought to defend. And that irony is only exacerbated when it’s our government’s own bureaucracy at perpetuating it upon our soldiers’ return home.

Veterans deserve protection from exploitation. But there is a fundamental difference between protecting someone’s freedom and protecting that person from exercising it.

More than 160 years ago, President Lincoln promised to care for those who bore the battle.

Surely, honoring that promise requires respecting the very liberties they sacrificed so much to preserve.

Because gratitude without action is little more than sentiment.

Our veterans should not have to fight another battle simply to exercise the freedoms they fought to defend.

The work is only beginning. Our veterans upheld their promise, and were wounded in doing so. This action merely seeks to ensure the VA upholds the promise it made, too.

God bless this great nation, and thank you to all who defend and fight for it 🇺🇸 by @luke_simianer
