Few waves on the Progressive Plus setting @urbnsurf Sydney left. Riding a @jsindustries99 5”11x 19 3/4x 2 5/8 32 litres carbotune Monsta. When I’m trying to tune in, or test a new small wave board, I like to surf the mellow settings to see how the board carry’s, and fits in the pocket. The @flowstate_zone clips make it so easy to study your waves and improve your next session. Make sure to sign up before surfing any of the @urbnsurf locations. As a young obsessed Surfing Grommet from Merewether. I loved everything about the Hawaiian they called “The Rubber Man” His layback tube rides made me practice and practice for hours and hours off the Rocks at Merewether. To finally make the layback tube ride one of my signature moves, I still love doing to this day. And when ever I’m complimented for doing so, I’ve always commented, Long Live The Layback Legend Larry Bertlemann. So I promise Larry, I’ll say it for as long as I can keep Laying Back! Luke Egan, an all time living Legend of surfing. I was lucky to get his attention while interviewing surfers for the documentary of the history of portuguese surfing in Australia.
Before we get into his connection to Portugal, I wanted to show you a bit of Luke's origins. It was delightful to discover that he was born already embedded in the surf culture. And embracing surfing not only as a sport but also as a strong family bond.

30 yrs later the truth finally comes out about the drama surrounding my controversial @surfer_magazine cover from 1997 - it was the first cover featuring a longboard since Herbie Fletchers 1976 Maui pic and it caused some real turmoil in the surfer mag office…for years I’d tell this story and people would say I was exaggerating or making it up! Big love @swellseasonsurfradio for digging up the truth …thanks surfer editor @stevehawk6211 for the apology and big love @tomservaisjr who took the pic and old surfing mag editor @eslate for the added commentary! I’ve been fighting for longboardings legitimacy within our close minded industry since forever!

What an unforgettable trip to Fiji 🇫🇯

Warm water and world-class waves all week at the #fijipro — this one felt like a gift. There’s something about Fiji that gets under your skin: the light, the reef, the way it slows you right down.

Huge thanks to @thesoutherncloud for the incredible hospitality and support all week — made it easy to just focus on supporting my surfers in the event.

But the waves were only half the story. Nights with my surfing family, laughing, swapping stories, celebrating the good times together — that’s what stays with me. Easily one of the most memorable weeks I’ve had. Already missing it. 🤙 taken in Cloudbreak, Tavarua, Fiji by @lukeegan

Now that I’ve got a son of my own, I understand you differently. I get it now — the quiet effort, the sacrifices you never made a big deal of, the way you led by just doing rather than talking. I find myself passing on these values to my son. Thank you!

Being a father myself has taught me how much of who I am traces straight back to you. The ocean, the work ethic, the steadiness — that’s all yours first. I only hope I’m passing it on half as well as you did.
