June 28th, 2020 I registered LULO and got my business license. It was an exciting but crazy time. The pandemic was in full swing and I was still recovering from the single most traumatic event of my life - falling off a cliff on a coffee farm and breaking my hip in the process. Traumatic, yes. But what is life without its challenges? Because this event also catalyzed the creation of LULO, without a doubt. Without this life-changing experience, I doubt this beautiful little company would have come into existence and so for that, I am forever grateful. Looking back on the last few years, I think it's safe to say we've all gone through some wild challenges. Pandemic, political division, inflation + rising costs, increasing amounts of disconnection...we've collectively been through some unpredictable stuff. Sometimes, it's helpful to take a moment to pause and reflect on that. On what we've been through, what we've had to do to make it work (s/o to all my small biz pals!), on how far we've all come even if it doesn't feel like it sometimes. So, to celebrate our sixth birthday, I'm sending out a reminder: That life's challenges sometimes set the stage but they never write the script. That how you handle your challenges is more important than what life throws at you. That you've got it within you to make it happen, whatever it is. That small steps can lead to big changes. That how it's going can be better than how it started, if you work on it. πŸ’™ Much love, Kev #howitstarted #howitsgoing #birthday #challenges #changes by @lulo.coffee
It's Halloween and time for a treat. No tricks here. This typica from the Don Eli micromill is a pure expression of the varietal when cultivated in an (uncertified) organic, biodynamic and, frankly, magical setting. Naturally processed, with zero fermentation, this cup is singing with expressive stone fruit, lively malic grape acidity, and deeply honeyed floral character on the finish. It comes largely from typica trees that are reaching upwards of 60 years of life, growing like vines in a wild setting. Completely filled with native flora species and hardly any outside inputs, this natural typica has captivated our palates with its effortless complexity. Find out more on the webshop and brew this one-of-a-kind treat of a coffee for yourself. Shipping across Canada and the US. #natural #organic #biodynamic #trickortreating by @lulo.coffee
LA QUEBRADA πŸ’¦ Okay pals, this is a special one for so many reasons: 1. The profile stands out as intense, syrupy and wild. It's dark purple and black fruits like jammy figs, black plum and raisin with a thick body of molasses. Bright apple notes with a coating, creamy mouthfeel bring apple pie to mind. Wildly delicious as filter and especially as espresso. A comforting profile yet not for the faint of heart. 2. It's a unique and wild two stage fermentation. The first is two days of warm, aerobic fermentation in cherry before being pulped with almost no water to retain most of the mucilage. The second stage is an 11 day anaerobic fermentation in sealed grainpro bags in an ice-cold natural spring. This slow, cool, extended fermentation allowed plenty of time for everything to coalesce into a wild, funky, yet still comforting profile. 3. This one is personal to me. The cold spring where the fermentation took place is also the spot where my life changed. In 2020, I fell from a cliff above this idyllic little spring, landing on its surprisingly jagged rocks, breaking my hip. I've struggled with chronic pain pretty much every since, but I always refused to let it overshadow my life. I carried that freshly pulped coffee from the wet mill to the spring on my back, going back and forth eight times to get it done. Despite the pain I was in, I decided to make something beautiful out of it. Of course, I didn't do it alone. @ronaldohurtado_ and @jacob.montero9 helped make this crazy project a reality, @carlos_monterocamacho_ and @selvacoffee supported the project from start to finish. This is a truly wild and amazing coffee. I hope you like brewing it half as much as I liked making it 🫑 - Kev #anaerobic #fermentation #pourover #espresso #wild by @lulo.coffee

πŸŽƒ PUMPKIN SPICE IS SO BACK πŸŽƒ Far, far, from the ordinary (so not (y)our style, amiright?), this pumpkin spice is made the A5 way: full of real pumpkin, fresh spices and steeped with care in-house! We highly recommend a classic PSL with the most delectable @lulocoffee but this syrup slaps in all sorts of ways, hot or cold! 🍡 Try it green with the mighty @matchadive πŸ«– Level up the spice with gorgeous Chai from @sloanetea 🍫 Or crush a few cravings at once with richness from @rebel_chocolates So many ways to sip during these pumpkin days, made even more special with this stunning mural backdrop by the inimitable @anyu_sun πŸ‰ See you soon πŸ€— The A5 Crew 🌈 #spookyseason #pumpkinspice #psl #sweaterweather #girlinred by @lulo.coffee
PARTNER SPOTLIGHT πŸ”¦ The one and only WILF & ADA'S @wilf_ada is one of centretown's...nay, Ottawa's favourite diners. It's a welcoming, inclusive place, full of mirth, merry, and mega-delicious food. It also happens to be the home of our Bedrock series dark(er) roast. Our most developed, full-bodied and chocolatey offering, it pairs perfectly with their sweet or savoury dishes. While every morsel that comes out of that talented kitchen is unbelievably scrumptious, plates to look out for are: Eggs in purgatory, @mariposafarm duck Benedict, and the Hungry Human. Not to mention their Benedict and waffle specials which are usually off the charts. Pro tip: this place takes no resos and rightfully fills up quick. If you find yourself waiting for a table, head over to @arlingtonfive and their GOATED barista crew will make you a bevy of your choice while you wait! We're honoured to find ourselves on the tables at this fine establishment, alongside other local small biz pals such as: @topshelfpreserves @seedtosausage @mariposafarm @michaelsdolce And many many others! So, whether you've been before or have never heard of this gem, take it as your sign to head to Wilfs ASAP! #diner #centretown #local613 #hungryhuman #darkroast by @lulo.coffee
HEY PALS πŸ‘‹πŸ‘‹πŸ‘‹ September 28th I had a total hip replacement on my left side. I had complications from the accident on my friend's coffee farm in 2020. Degenerative osteoarthritis and femoral necrosis, to be precise. I'd spent the last couple of years in WAY more pain than I care to admit. Nevertheless, in the days leading up to the surgery I was pretty anxious and afraid. Probably because the last time I was in hospital for surgery it was pretty traumatic. So, I was nervous going in but boy was I happy going out. The surgery went very well. Keep swiping to see what's been going on in my recovery so far πŸ¦ΏπŸ’™ #hip They had me walking about an hour after surgery finished and the anaesthetic wore off. I had less pain in these steps than I've had in too long to remember. #walk I'm so so grateful to be recovering at my folks place. They've made it possible for me to recover to the best of my ability and continue my obsessive brewing habits. Mornings have been filled with both types of PT. Plus more of the latter in the afternoon and evening πŸ’ͺ🦡 #pt This was my first pour over on the second day after surgery. It was the peak series community blend from @nasauycafe and let me tell you, a coffee has never tasted sweeter πŸ₯Ή #pourover No caption needed β˜€οΈ #sun These simple yet crucial exercises have been giving me life. I do them 3 or 4 times a day. Each time I do, I feel like sprinting off the bed. Of course, I don't - yet. But I feel like it and I haven't felt that in so long 🀟 #exercise Meeting with Ervin of @nativerootcoffee to discuss the logistics of our next shipment out of BogotΓ‘. We're also organizing shipments for some awesome, like-minded roasters and I'm so stoked. Oh, and we'll be doubling down on our volumes of their community blend and I'm even more stoked about that. It's truly special to have our volume menu slot filled by such honorable people. #logistics David has been holding it down in a HUGE way in the roastery while I'm unable to be there. He's been roasting and delivering your coffee, putting his all into each batch. I can rest easy knowing this dope guy is at the helm and for that I'm so grateful. by @lulo.coffee
new space, new coffee, and a special guest from ottawa β˜•οΈπŸ‘€ had such a fun time at @spiritedtarts.coffee for a special tasting event with @lulo.coffee during the summer! got to try a bunch of unique pour overs and blends while checking out their new space. basically, we showed up for coffee and somehow turned it into a full-on tasting session πŸ˜‚β˜•οΈ would you try a coffee tasting event like this? πŸ‘‡ tag your coffee buddy! πŸ“toronto, on #torontocoffee #torontocafe #todotoronto #coffeetasting #torontoeats by @lulo.coffee
GOOD MORNING YOU BEAUTS! Three days post-op and I'm feeling great. Locking in today in a big way and I hope you are too πŸ”’ It may be raining in Ottawa but the sun still shines within. Now let's gooooooooo!!! βš‘β˜€οΈβš‘β˜€οΈβ˜• by @lulo.coffee
Okay pals...here we are. It's the day before my hip replacement and I'm a mixed bag of emotions. 50% stressed out and nervous and 50% stoked on what it will be like after. I've been living with chronic pain for long enough now that it's hard to imagine life without it. Honestly, I probably should have had this surgery a year or two ago. Looking back on that time, it's easy to see (yet hard to admit) the impact it's had on my life and indeed the business. I think in an effort to not be defined by my condition (degenerative osteoarthritis), my mind was quick to ignore signals my body was trying to give me. So, despite being nervous, I'm ultimately super pumped to have the chance at walking without a limp, living without pain, being able to put my socks on without an immense amount of effort, and to not have my world shrunk down to the size that my pain management would allow. I founded LULO on the spirit of adventure, connection, and earnest collaboration and I'm afraid I haven't been able to embody those principles as well as I'd like. To have the chance at recovering that spirit means the world to me. I can't wait to get the surgery done and get busy with rehab and recovery. I can't wait to jump out of bed again, excited for the day, knowing that when my feet touch the ground, pain won't shoot up my leg. I'm so grateful for all the support I've had and continue to have during this period. My family, friends, colleagues and customers. It's you guys who've got me through it and that's not lost on me. And if you're out there and any of this is resonating with you, let it be the push for you to get the help you need. Don't wait. You've got it in you to do what needs done, even if it takes a helping hand or two. Okay that's it pals. Shifting into surgery mode now. I'm so stoked to see you on the other side πŸ’™ Ps. Thanks to David, the roastery is business as usual! While I recover, he'll be masterfully handling all of your orders from start to finish, with me as support and QC. βœŒοΈπŸ’™β˜•πŸŒ±βœ¨ by @lulo.coffee
We can't get enough of the community blend, PEAKS SERIES πŸ”οΈπŸ† πŸ’πŸŒΈπŸ―πŸ‹ So expressive and sweet, yet still super clean. The kind of cup you can drink everyday and still find nuance. Our favourite method is the V60. Just so floral and vibrant. If you've been looking for a crispy boi to brighten up those mornings, this is it. Grab a bag and try this recipe out. The ladies @nasauycafe have truly outdone themselves with this one. Pro tip: the Cafec filters make all the difference, and we happen to have them in stock 🫑 #lightroast #v60 #pourover #sparklesparkle #cafedeColombia by @lulo.coffee
We're fresh from the 2026 LULO company retreat. An afternoon on the water and an evening of rest and relaxation is just what we needed before things get crazy with the holiday season and my upcoming hip surgery. No big insights or grand announcements. Those are coming. For now, let your feed be filled with these sweet stills and your hearted be filled with the type of awe only mother nature can provide. Today we're busy at the roastery, centered and grounded after our little escape. Expect more updates and fresh coffees soon. Until then, may your cup be filled with delicious coffee! βœŒοΈβ˜•πŸ’™ - Kev #retreat #kayak #nature #neature #calm by @lulo.coffee
