Since 2012, I have had the immense pleasure of documenting the development of @jeannesak’s play, starring @joeldelafuente, helmed by Lisa Rothe. Today is the final performance of the run @luna.stage. @jeannesak, her friend herethereareblueberries colleague @samreeder and I took NJ Tranisit to Orange,NJ to attend a soldout and very receptive audience. Joel’s performance is a tour-de-force where he plays 30 different characters. @montclairhighschoolnj school board member were in the audience. Happy trails. 📷 @liachangphotography taken in Luna Stage by @lulubellarothe

Happy Opening to Jeanne Sakata, Joel de la Fuente and Lisa Rothe @luna.stage. Drama Desk Nominated Joel de la Fuente in Jeanne Sakata's HOLD THESE TRUTHS at Luna Stage https://wp.me/p8ilTC-hXD The season opener, Jeanne Sakata’s Hold These Truths stars Joel de la Fuente (Man in the High Castle) playing 36 characters in a powerful solo play inspired by civil rights pioneer Gordon Hirabayashi, who peaceably resisted the U.S. government’s forced incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII. Hold These Truths made its Luna debut as part of last season’s PlayFest, and returns as a full production in response to audience demand from September 24-October 18. Luna Stage is located at 555 Valley Rd, West Orange, NJ 07052. For tickets and more information, visit www.lunastage.org.

During WWII in Seattle, University of Washington student Gordon Hirabayashi fights the US government’s orders to forcibly remove and incarcerate all people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast. As he struggles to reconcile his country’s betrayal with his passionate belief in the US Constitution, Gordon begins a 50-year journey toward a greater understanding of America’s triumphs - and a confrontation with its failures. A story filled with hope, this play will leave you cheering for a man who stood up for the true meaning of patriotism. In May 2012, Gordon Hirabayashi was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, by President Barack Obama.

𝙎𝙮𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨: Fresh off the boat from Roaring Twenties Paris, Henrietta “Henri” Adams lands in New York in the midst of the Queer Craze that is taking the city by storm. An art critic by day and lady lover by night, she ventures into the clandestine worlds of speakeasies and drag balls, which free her from the tyranny of the gender binary. Fun-loving slummers crash the party, flocking to see queer performers at the Astor Hotel and the Cotton Club. Broadway stars rub elbows with Harlem Renaissance luminaries at the Hamilton Lodge Masquerade Ball. But the revelry can't last forever.
Faced with Depression-era crackdowns, Henri calculates the risk of fighting back, prompting a decision with far-reaching consequences.
𝘼𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙧: Margaret Vandenburg, a versatile storyteller with a Ph.D. from Columbia University, weaves compelling narratives as a novelist, playwright, and essayist, addressing poignant topics such as family dynamics in the face of autism, the Iraq War, and disinformation campaigns in the 2020 election, while championing reproductive rights through her latest play, 𝘙𝘰𝘦 𝘷. I'm part of Roe v. Wade 2.0, a grassroots collective of artists and activists organizing a week of action May 16-23 to activate public outcry in defense of reproductive rights.
Collective member and playwright Margaret Vandenburg (Drama League Award nominee, 2021) has written a satirical play about the horror show that is the conservative-majority Supreme Court. Folks across the country are signing up to host readings of it on Zoom, in parks, in living rooms, in theatres, and more, all joining forces to take action.
The action kicks off on May 16 with a broadcast reading featuring Carrie Preston, CJ Wilson, Florencia Lozano, Jo Chim, Joel de la Fuente, Johnny Wu, Kathryn Erbe, Peter McCabe, Portia & Tiffany Clifton.
Live readings are taking shape in NY, Chicago, Minneapolis, and more. Want to host a reading in your city/town? Or join another that's taking place?
