Today, my ‘little’ Caspian turns one… though he’s quickly reminding us he’s not so little anymore!

•𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒂𝒚 𝑾𝒆 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝑻𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝑼𝒔
And I can’t help but remember the special gift he gave us just two weeks ago, his very first scent work trial, a first step in his scent work journey and such meaningful milestone leading up to his birthday.

•𝟏𝟏 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐥𝐝 ...
Grateful for every lesson, every sniff, and every moment we’ve shared learning together.

•Not the ribbons, not the placements… but the gift of trust, teamwork, and understanding. A curious, excitable, and friendly little boy, full of heart, cleverness, and endless energy.

•We walked into the trial with nervous hearts. The place outside the room was alive, dogs, movement, noises, distractions everywhere. a lot for a young puppy to take in.

• Amidst the chaos, we stepped in with no expectations, simply to experience, to explore, and to learn together. (Honestly, it was pretty nerve-wracking for a first-timer like us.)

Last Sunday, we opened a small session for those on the CNRX waitlist for Canicross basics and met even more like-minded dog people who don’t just want to spend time with their buds, but want to move, explore, and do things together!

This tribe is growing, slowly but surely, and we’re loving every moment of it.

Today was one of those moments that reminded me how far Caspian has come.💙

Caspian has always been quite the sensitive boy. Sound of our balcony blinds, noises outside our front door, or movement in the environment can easily catch his attention n vocalise.As a BC mix, he's naturally tuned in to motion, things can be especially exciting or triggering for him. I've also often wondered if he's especially sensitive to certain sound, we even changed our air fryer because the high tone /frequency seemed to bother him.

We had our TV replaced. He's generally a calm dog at home despite his triggers,since we rarely have reno/strangers in our home, didn't know how Caspian would react. Wanting to set him up for success, playpen panels across my bedroom doorway so he could safely see n hear everything while still having a clear boundary.

Tech spent ard 45 minutes walking in and out while knocking n drilling into the wall just a couple of metres away. Decided to make the most of it as a training oppo. Over duration, he barked once when the technician said hello, a couple of times during the installation, n a few times when he was leaving, which I've noticed is one of his triggers when people leaves.

But what stayed with me wasn't the barking.

It was watching him notice what was happening, process it and settle.
Despite the unfamiliarity, loud knocking drilling, and constant movement around, Caspian continued taking treats, offered eye contact, and repeatedly chose to reconnect with me.

For many dogs, that may not seem like much. But for us, it felt like a genuine step forward in the right direction

Today wasn't perfect and it didn't need to be. I know there will still be harder days, but moments like these remind me that all the little training sessions, the patience, and the consistency are slowly adding up. 💙

I'm really proud of him. 💙

Bonus: technician even commented on how clean our floors were despite us having dogs, n didn't mind us training n praised Cas🥹 Pawmum was delighted.

And maybe this is a reminder to myself too: trust the process, keep showing up, and don't let the difficult days make me forget how far we've already come. One small step at a by @luminarapaws
