I’ve created a new FREE DOWNLOAD that is absolute 🔥 for PhD transferable skills!
My clients said it’s the best thing I’ve ever created and it’s been hugely valuable to them already! 🤯

Sign up and get Mastering Transferable Skills: A PhD Skills Workbook!

Remember to STOP underselling your skills because academia didn’t value them! 👊

💥They are valuable and organisations will pay top dollar for them!

Ever overlooked a skill because it comes naturally to you? 🤔

🧐We often underestimate our innate talents, thinking 'Doesn't everyone have this ability?'

But those unique strengths can set you apart! 🤩

Whether it's seamlessly navigating across cultures or mastering multiple languages, these 'easy' skills are gold. 🏅

For instance, my journey through academia in the US, Sweden, and the UK wasn't just about scholarly pursuits.

👉It armed me with knowledge of visas and immigration, empathy for international clients, insights into varied academic landscapes, a global perspective, and language proficiency.

🌟Just as I learned to value and communicate these strengths, ensure you highlight yours in every conversation with potential employers or clients.

Because what's 'just normal' for you could be exceptional to others.

The hardest part is finding yourself so you can pivot with purpose and direction! So, I'm sharing mine since I've now had years of self-reflection.

For me, getting a university degree was a way to escape poverty and to have a "legitimate, professional" job.

This constant striving trickled down to my child during lockdown. Worries of productivity - will my child keep up with schoolwork? Will I be productive working from home?

When did productivity, accumulation, and striving get muddled with learning/growth?

I had a very successful career: PhD, lecturer, senior lecturer, research prize winner, Deputy Research Director!

... but are these meaningful?

Do these show what I contributed to education, community, thriving of communities? No! This has become clear to me over the years of unraveling the messages society doled out.

I realized that my light had not had opportunity to shine until I had a purpose!

One of my clients said “They don’t like to see you get out of your box!” – Academia is more comfortable when you conform to the status quo and don’t cause too much of a fuss, even when you’re Head of EDI initiatives.

My biggest realization was that I didn’t need to keep investing in a career that no longer aligned with my values.

👉🏼 You can end things on your own terms instead of waiting for the system to take further advantage of you and then throw you out.

So, I actually TOOK CONTROL and RESIGNED!

✅ Amplify your empowerment and strengths.
✅ Re-Energize your core values and honor them.
✅ Re-Define success on your own terms.
✅ Supercharge your passions and purpose and don’t be afraid to pivot!
✅ Who deserves to benefit from your passion next? Think long and hard about that.

For me, I decided to strike out on my own, start a couple of companies and do exactly what I was trying to do in academia.

I reclaimed my purpose and carved out a new path.

I now feel a great freedom as I make another journey, this time with my own vision rather than following the bog-standard expectations.

I'm excited to share my guest spot with Catrina Mitchum for her Course Creation Crap podcast.

"You Already Built the Course: Reorganizing What You Have Instead of Starting Over."

In it, I've gotten so much expert advice.

* Build a Choose Your Own Adventure to the course to gamify it a bit
* Bring in the freebies I've created and make them more effective within the course
* Stop creating more freebies! haha!
* Have 1:1 sessions that accelerate progress at the biggest stick-points to ensure people complete and feel the course has actually helped them.

I was invited to speak at 8 events last year, mostly at universities. So, I wanted to share some of the workshops and talks that have proven most popular for post-docs, lecturers, researchers and especially for those people who generally have been underrepresented in higher education.

I've done bespoke workshops for international PhDs, Black and Global Majority in STEM, and talks for International Women's Day focused on wellbeing. One of my favourite ones was in Mallorca (because why not!) which focused on being an international researcher.

Having moved from the US to do a postdoc in Sweden while being the 1st PDRA to publish in just 6 months and then earning a prize in the UK within 3 years of starting as a lecturer, I've learned so much about succeeding but also eventually learning how to survive the day to day pressures.

Because we all know the academic work is never done and everything is always urgent!!

My biggest motivator in running these workshops is empowerment and giving people freedom through knowledge, choice, self-leadership through self-awareness and negotiation. Opportunities should not be closed to anyone simply because they are unfamiliar with the game or the underlying culture.

If you work at a university, contact me and I'd be happy to chat about what you're looking for and how I might deliver it. by @lunacmunoz

The last few weeks have been busy! First went to the Walker Museum Gender Exhibit and then went to see Josh Johnson on US independence day which was amazing and so hilarious.

Then, a few birthday parties ( Emily and @crystalmaisie ) with sauna, good music and delicious food as well as silly antics with Jo! Love all the fellow Cancer people 🦀

And then, I went on the 5 mile bike ride under the Mersey River but it actually turned into 12 miles since I cycled to and from my house 🚴‍♀️ And my knee held out!!

In the meantime, I've helped an organisation apply for a multi-year grant from the MoJ, and welcomed 2 new academic clients in Building Beyond Academia and Life After Academia! 🤩

Next week, I'm away in London and Brighton 💜💃 by @lunacmunoz

It's been a couple months but I've been implementing something I learned at the last Kindred Liverpool City Region Social Economy Club where I met Kate James, Rebecca Pope and others.

Kate told us about Shoot Your Shot Wednesdays! and I immediately booked in some coaching with Natalia Sanyal who I've been following on LinkedIn for years.

We outlined the work I do with academics, what my ultimate "why" is and how to build out a new product along with marketing and exploring new networks.

And today, Wednesday, I shot out an email query to a university - a potential lead - and got back an invitation right away. This will be a colourful, creative collaboration with Clare Jonas of That Thinking Feeling and we cannot wait to release it to the world!!

Have you heard of Shoot Your Shot or do you have your own motivational phrase?? by @lunacmunoz

Picked up my number and shirt for the Liverpool bike ride next Sunday 5th July! I'm only doing the family ride of 5 miles just to start off conservatively - if you know me, this is really hard for me as I tend to overdo everything.

But this is basically a celebration of 8 months post-surgery progress. And I'm stoked that I get to cycle under the Mersey river through a tunnel normally reserved for cars 🤩

I'm raising funds for North West Cancer Research so if you'd like to contribute, I've put the link on my linktree under my contact links in my LinkedIn profile.

Wish me luck! Is anyone else going from my network? by @lunacmunoz

Last week, I went to the LCR Race Equality Hub celebration of their impact and achievements. It really fired me up to keep working with them as they launch their LCR Anti-Racism Strategy!

I've been involved both as a participant and in service delivery and it was lovely to see my name in the slides because my story is one of going from strength to strength with their help.

I joined the Innervision programme led by Joanne Anderson, which was a game-changer for my business, and connected me with an inspiring group of peers who I've had the pleasure of bidding for contracts with, but also counting as friends and dinner buddies.

And even after all that reflection time on the Innervision programme, listening to the renewed goals in the Hub as they gear up for extended funding...
I still had an epiphany on where my heart lies in my business!

I want to support opening access and opportunities for communities that have seen underinvestment and a lack of support - values aligned with the Hub.

This means helping people identify and celebrate what they do well. I aim to champion their ambitions through coaching and consulting, helping them measure social impact, and helping to attract much-needed investments.

And if I can help influence policy in line with evidence, I'll be a happy bunny!

At the event, it was fantastic to meet everyone I've worked with, including Maleka Egeonu-Roby, who had commissioned a workshop on writing grants and proposals.

From that workshop, I'd helped a couple of organisations with their funding applications.

One of them told me at the event that they'd received funding from the application. Another organisation I assisted over Xmas while recovering from knee surgery also got funding, allowing them to open a new venue and acquire new equipment for young people.

The event celebrated in ways that resonate with me.... dance, music, poetry and rhythm - thanks Andrew Barney and Zi Lan Liao! When I was supervising doctoral students, we'd celebrate with hula hoops in the park before getting back to work on research.

I hope to bring dance into some of the new partnerships I'm making ....

Yesterday, I went to a research unconference organised by Mighty Mini Research Collective where we talked about the realities of being self-employed, communicating our value, finding clients, being visible and believing in ourselves and we even got to meet with the social researcher association CEO who will talk to Parliament about the difficulties we face in bidding for tenders and being commissioned for research.

We even made our own badges and with magazines and newspapers that we could canibalise.

I'm buzzing!

Would you attend one? I might have volunteered to host the next one 🙃😅 by @lunacmunoz
