Have you ever wanted to tell stories through woven cloth?

My four week Intro to Figurative Inlay Workshop is designed to take you from the fundamentals of inlay to confidently creating your own complex imagery with pattern inlay, one step at a time.

Week 1: Learn the basics
Week 2: Plan your imagery and warp
Week 3: Explore inlay strategies and build more complex imagery
Week 4: Finish your piece, learn how to display and exhibit textile art, and participate in a supportive group critique

We meet live on Zoom in a small group each week, giving you plenty of opportunities to ask questions, receive personalized feedback, and grow alongside other weavers. Between sessions, you’ll also have access to a dedicated Discord community to ask questions, share progress, and connect with classmates.

This class will give you a strong foundation for building your own visual, figurative language through weaving. It’s fabulous for all skill levels, as long as you have the weaving basics down, like dressing your own loom.

❤️ September, October, and November sessions are now open. Register today to reserve your spot, link in bio ❤️ taken in Asheville, North Carolina by @lunadendron

The classic weave we all know and love 🖤

The oldest known houndstooth cloth was discovered in the Celtic salt mines of Hallstatt, Austria, and dates to 1500–1200 BC.

The pattern was popular in 19th c. Scotland, where it was worn by shepherds, before making its way into British sporting attire.

Elsa Schiaparelli helped bring houndstooth into high fashion in the 1930s, and Christian Dior made it iconic with his 1948 New Look collection. Dior’s houndstooth Aventure coat is a favorite of mine!

I’m currently weaving a collection of houndstooth scarves in variations of the classic check. I love how instantly recognizable it is to visitors at the studio 🖤 taken in Pink Dog Creative by @lunadendron

weaving a houndstooth collection at @pinkdogcreative 🖤

I wove a tiny batch of houndstooth aviator scarves last year, and I’m revisiting this iconic pattern with an 18 yard warp of scarves + cowls.

Houndstooth uses a straight twill threading and treadling. The graphic tessellations come from the tie-up, combined with color-and-weave striping in both the warp and weft.

This fancy houndstooth is one of my favorite variations. I call it bow ties or throwing stars! taken in River Arts District Artists, Asheville by @lunadendron

devil girl ❤️‍🔥

I wove this sparkly inner demon with pattern inlay on a plain weave cotton ground, working from the bottom up. At 30 × 40 in, this is the biggest and most complex figurative inlay I’ve woven so far.

Every part of her is woven by hand, including all of the tiny details and color changes that build the figure.

I am proud of this one. She is hanging in my studio at @pinkdogcreative in @riverartsdistrictasheville.

What if you could build your own imagery directly into the structure of woven cloth?

That’s what we explore in my virtual Intro to Figurative Inlay workshop.

Over four weeks, I’ll teach you how to use pattern inlay to create imagery in weaving, from your first simple designs to more complex narrative pieces. We’ll cover:

~the basics of pattern inlay
~planning your imagery and warp
~strategies for weaving more complex images
~finishing, displaying, and exhibiting textile art

We meet live on Zoom once a week for four weeks in a small group, so there’s plenty of time for questions, troubleshooting, and personalized feedback. All live sessions are recorded and sent to you the following day. You’ll also have access to our Discord community between sessions to share your progress and ask questions.

This is for weavers who already know the basics of dressing and weaving on a multi-shaft loom and want to take their weaving in a more visual, narrative direction.

October and November sessions are now open, then we’re taking a winter break. If you’ve been wanting to learn how to make your own imagery through weaving, this is the class!

This was the biggest figurative inlay I’d woven until my current WIP.

At the time, I needed a project to dive into and get lost in. I was having nightmares about surviving Helene, interspersed with dreams of a shadowy silhouette of a girl walking through the water.

Not in, but through.

I realized long after weaving her that I am her. She is me, and a reminder to hold in reverence the fertile ground of grief.

I think a lot about the ways we’re expected to talk about disaster and grief. There’s so much pressure to turn survival into a story of resilience, recovery, or inspiration. I don’t always recognize my experience in those narratives, and I know I’m not alone. taken in River Arts District Artists, Asheville by @lunadendron

Making progress on the devil girl! This is the biggest, most complex figurative inlay art I’ve woven.

I’m working with several inlay wefts in a wide range of fibers, from lovely merino silk to nasty novelty synthetics. This project has really pushed me and tested my patience (in a good way, I think!) and I can’t wait to see it off the loom. taken in Pink Dog Creative by @lunadendron
