POSTS STORIES REELS

Dear, “3026 A Cantopop Odyssey”
Thank you @westk, Susanna, Cathy, Vivian, Jamie for your trust and for allowing us to bring this highly ambitious show to production! Thank you production team, sound and lights for keeping up with our crazy ideas. :)

Thank you Eugene and Jerold my two other brains and brothers. I am so grateful for our mutual respect and consideration.

Eugene for always pushing me. I can be stubborn but having someone like you who goes against my grain is truly a rare gem to treasure. Always picking on my pitch, and performance. The small details. You refined everything. If anyone praises my performance it’s all because you crafted it.

Jerold. I have deeply cherished working with you and find great security in your persistence and attention to detail. Your late night efforts to reimagine the canto classics were a delight to dig into! May more ears hear your work!

Thank you Candace my beautiful wife for all the amazing magic you did. We all know this show wouldn’t have been possible without you.

lunarantz & solarbeez. Renee and Alex. Thank you for your energy and dedication. Having you guys in the show made my heart warm and. You guys added a layer that cannot be replaced. You guys are professional on stage and joy to be around backstage.

Dear band. Your musicianship really brought to life the classics with a post apocalyptic AI tinge. You guys brought the groove and vibes of 3026! You were the color palate for me to tell my stories.

Dear kayan. I admire you independence and calmness. Thank you for your elegance, perceptiveness, quiet, humble and attentive energy. And then BOOM! When you came onstage,✨ radiant! You found so many great small details in your performance that brought our show to another level! Everyone loved it! Wish we had more runs so we could show the world that moment when you take off the jacket!

WE DID IT! WE MADE A MUSICAL! SO PROUD!

Thanks @botanic_union for the 🌈 light! 💡

3026: A Cantopop Odyssey
Grand Theater @ Xiqu, West K - June 2026

In a stroke of luck and fate, I got to make one more show with the charming and secretly audacious @alamfish . Yet this time, it was a much larger show that required much more structure and less intimacy in a 1000+ seater. Being tasked with creating a jukebox musical, with the set up and budget of a cabaret, and having to spotlight two wonderful singers, a youth chorus, supported by a brilliant band led by @jezzachu . As with my general fate with large scale productions, we had four full studio days of rehearsal to put this together due to availability (and we snuck in an off site dress rehearsal and some early individual creative meeting sessions of course), and the result had me super proud of all involved!

Alex was a mensch in this process — with many new songs to learn, and a dramatic frame to juggle with a rehearsal schedule that I would’ve never been secure under if I had to lead a show, he was always calm and steadfast. A no doubt leader of a team under any conditions! And @candacepooon playing way more than a manager was a constant rock in this process.

Jerold was also beyond game and open to play with the shapes of many of these standards with some very exciting finds - especially 心債in 4/4 and 改變常改變～ Leading a band with no time to spare, and still got it down. With @natewong.playsgongs @jbasslines75 @bzpobzpo @edward_dlee being not only great musicians, but fantastic showmen being featured in this fantasia.

Of course there’s @kayan9896 who really stood her own! As our star-turn “eleven o’clock” antagonist. Musically solid, and always game to play, while being a superb team player. Resulting in a shining, towering, seductive and mystifying presence in this show!

Then there is @aimhighmusicfoundation and @lunarantz ! Thank you @renee.chingyan for drilling the Ants on my behalf with love and force in equal parts!! For @john.laudon ‘s performance as our opening narrator; and for @colvinluk for introducing me to Alex to begin this whole odyssey!

And to our producers: Susanna, Cathy and Vivian 🙏for your trust and support! And @jmeyuen.aep for your 2000 🤩drafts! And Denzel 🔦! by @lunarantz

Cantopop 🎶

Alex Lai @alex_sakuragihanamichi 🐜❤️

Last night before our show! Take a moment to appreciate the queit before the storm… hope we are all prepared and then when we go on stage we just enjoy and shine.✨

Thanks to all the people who joined me on this crazy 3026 Cantopop Odyssey! Your blood sweat and tears your trust and respect! 🫡 thank you 🙏

So what is 3026 A Cantopop Odyssey?

It’s a story set in a post apocalyptic 3026. The location. The Xiqu grand theatre… AI is deleting everything in order to save the world. But in the shadows of the old theatre remains some individuals who have a connection to the past.

Enter our anti hero! Alex stumbles into the old theatre and through a series of unexpected encounters connects to the people@left behind. They play, they cry, the reminiscence and they celebrate. They find a lifeline from the classic songs of 1980-90’s Hong Kong.

But beware for the end is near. AI 🤖 approach is inevitable… will humanity and the arts survive!!!?

Join us in this odyssey to survive extinction and deletion. How can we hold onto our memories? How can we keep our dreams alive in the digital age?

“Preserve your memories, they’re all that left you.”

-Paul Simon

See you guys tmr!
