Last Saturday, July 11, marked the final performance of Rossini’s La Cenerentola at the Palais Garnier in Paris.

As a former opera singer, I especially appreciate the intelligence and precision behind Rossini’s comedy. The rapid ensembles, sparkling coloratura, rhythmic energy, mistaken identities, social satire, and perfectly controlled chaos make this opera far more sophisticated than a simple Cinderella story.

Performed in Italian, the cast featured mezzo-soprano Gaëlle Arquez as Angelina, Lawrence Brownlee as Don Ramiro, Nicola Alaimo as Don Magnifico, Huw Montague Rendall as Dandini, Adolfo Corrado as Alidoro, Maria Warenberg as Clorinda, and Manon Lamaison as Tisbe, conducted by Enrique Mazzola.

A brilliant final performance of one of Rossini’s most entertaining and demanding works, presented in the extraordinary setting of the Palais Garnier.
