A better highlighted hairline starts with one simple move

•Slipping & Sliding – placing a vertical/diagonal foil at the hairline while bending sideways. (not good for your body)

•Shadows – from not getting close enough to the root and pulling away from the head while folding your foil up.

It is easiest to place a foil HORIZONTALLY.

This is where we have Client Participation!

To get their head in the perfect place while standing at the front of what you are foiling, simply ask your client to…
“Put your ear to your shoulder… chin down… look at me!”

VOILA… A horizontal hairline to foil!

Creating Predictable Hair Color Results

This simple approach helps you quickly identify which tonal family to add to your formula to control unwanted tones and achieve your desired result.

Hair naturally reflects underlying tones that must be neutralized so they don’t interfere with your final color.

Cracking the code
When all three primary colors - blue, red, and yellow - are present, they neutralize each other.

Color breakdown:
Primary colors: Blue, Red, Yellow
Secondary colors (created by mixing primaries):
• Violet = Blue + Red
• Green = Blue + Yellow
• Orange = Red + Yellow

Neutralization rule - what’s missing is what you need.
• Blue → neutralized by Orange (Red + Yellow)
• Red → neutralized by Green (Blue + Yellow)
• Yellow → neutralized by Violet (Blue + Red)
• Violet → neutralized by Yellow
• Green → neutralized by Red
• Orange → neutralized by Blue

Another way to think about it
If you see a primary tone, use a secondary color to neutralize it.
If you see a secondary tone, use a primary color to neutralize it.
Master this, and your color results become consistent, controlled, and predictable.

No lows = No Dimension
Bonus - Color Correction Technique

A highlight is not a highlight without something next to it, deeper in level or a different tone.

Last step in this Polishing Foil Series!

When I place dimension or a new growth, I add a shadow to support the highlight dimension or create a negative effect for a shine line.
This is a great Color Correction Technique. It will disrupt any banding in the hair!

After placing a new growth or after placing my highlight foils, simply comb the new growth down with my pintail and/or randomly pinch the color, pulling it down with my fingers.

The steps for my client’s service (see the two previous posts):
Apply New Growth (in this scenario, 50% grey)
 •Place the Polishing  •Formula Dimension
 •Shadowing – supporting   the dimension

The effect of placing highlights over color.
Greys are perfectly covered with Seamless Dimension!

We did this technique in the 90’s... bleach wasn’t our first choice for highlights!
Bring it back!

Apply the New Growth formula
·      It does not have to be grey coverage.

Apply the dimension
·      Take slice/parting above the new growth color, not to pull color down onto the slice/parting.
·      Take your weave or slice effect.
·      Scrape the back of the slice/parting to remove the color from the backside
·      Scrape the top of the slice/parting to remove the color from the front side
·      Apply your High-Lift. Make sure to saturate.
·      Fold your foil!

Stay tuned for a quick shadow pull while your foils are processing. An excellent technique to get the most out of your dimension, and it can also blend bands.

Wet Highlights – Highlighting over a New Growth Application

How to prevent warm results when highlighting over color.

When highlighting over hair color, the result can be warm. One reason could be that the powder lightener or bleach is working through the new growth color.

This technique, using a High-Lift, is a quick way to add dimension to a new growth application.
A High-Lift will give you lift and deposit, saving time from toning.
After your new growth application, apply your dimension. The technique is fun and quick.
