What did it mean to be a woman artist in the late Ottoman Empire?

This conversation explores the career of Mihri, a pioneering portraitist who became a leading figure in the Ottoman art world and played a central role in establishing the Academy of Fine Arts for Women in Istanbul in 1914.

Drawing on archival sources and visual material, Gizem Tongo examines Mihri’s practice alongside that of her contemporary women artists, exploring questions of artistic agency, Orientalism and the social hierarchies that shaped the art world of the late Ottoman Empire.

The conversation will also consider how women artists navigated, challenged and, at times, transformed the constraints placed upon their artistic practice.

In a mountainous landscape at dawn, a standing figure gestures towards the sunrise while his companions awaken nearby. Tents and camels in the distance suggest a temporary encampment. Antoine Alphonse Montfort exhibited this painting at the Paris Salon in 1835 under the title Un Arabe réveille ses compagnons en montrant à l’un d’eux le lever du soleil - ‘An Arab wakes his companions by showing one of them the sunrise.’

The painting was inspired by the artist’s travels across the Ottoman Empire. Drawing on sketches made during these journeys. Preparatory studies preserved in the Louvre reveal the evolution of the composition. An early sketch shows horses that were later replaced by camels in the finished painting (RF 7613), while another surviving drawing closely relates to the central figure’s distinctive pose (RF 7667). Montfort’s travel notes from his 1827–1828 journey are preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France.

What do we see when we travel? And what do we leave unseen?

In this painting, Italian artist Alberto Pasini captures a group of guards and horses gathered at the entrance of a mosque. But beyond the scene itself lies a bigger story: how travel shaped the way places were seen, understood, and imagined. For many Europeans, cities across the East were experienced through paintings and travel accounts rather than first-hand encounters. Artists like Pasini helped create these visual representations, shaping how distant places came to be imagined.

So, when we look at a painting like this, we can ask: whose perspective are we seeing and whose story is missing?

by @lusailmuseum

What if the real story of travel is not only the traveller, but the people and systems that helped them move?

In Traveling in Persia, Edwin Lord Weeks captures a moment from his journey through Persia, depicting two horses and their chavadars — the local handlers who helped organise and support his caravan from Tabriz to Tehran. Look closely, and the painting reveals more than a scene of travel. The worn saddles, colourful tack, bells and carefully observed horses offer a glimpse into the everyday work behind a long-distance journey. For Weeks, reaching his destination depended on a network of people, animals, knowledge and labour.

The painting invites us to look beyond the traveller and consider the many unseen hands that make movement possible.

What story lies behind this portrait?🖼️

Painted by William Hoare in 1733, this is the earliest known British oil portrait of a formerly enslaved African man, it depicts its sitter as a dignified individual in his own right; not a type, but a person.
Ayuba Suleiman Diallo was born into a family of Fulani Muslim religious leaders in Bundu, in present-day Senegal. The family itself engaged in the regional slave trade. Diallo was travelling to sell enslaved people on his father’s behalf, he was captured, trafficked across the Atlantic, and sold to a Maryland tobacco plantation. It was his fluency in Arabic that changed his fate, catching the attention of London’s elite and securing his freedom.

In Britain, Diallo became a sought-after scholar, working with Sir Hans Sloane to organize the Arabic manuscripts. Sir Hans Sloane collection would later form the founding collection of the British Museum. Diallo is portrayed wearing traditional Fula dress with a copy of the Holy Qur’an around his neck; might be one of the three copies he famously recreated from memory.

The painting is under a long-term loan agreement between Qatar Museums and the National Portrait Gallery, London.

Known for his detailed Orientalist style, Rudolf Swoboda captures a quiet scene of prayer inside the mosque of Sultan Qaytbay’s funerary complex in Cairo, carefully depicting its carved minbar, marble surfaces, decorated arches, and colorful stained-glass windows. Beyond its artistic value, the painting preserves the mosque’s original colors and details, many of which have since been lost to time.
In the spirit of reflection, gathering, and devotion that marks this season, Eid Mubarak✨

Did the Ottoman Empire really need to end for modernity to begin?

Mostafa Minawi invited audiences to reconsider the assumptions that empire and modernity were mutually exclusive. Drawing on his book, Losing Istanbul, Minawi unpacks how Arab imperial figures navigated power, identity and political transformation in the empire’s final decades.

What makes Eid special around the world? In its simple moments; sharing fruits, stories and laughter together.✨

Painted by John Frederick Lewis after years of living in Cairo, this scene shows men gathered in a traditional courtyard enjoying a midday meal of fruit. Known for his careful and detailed depictions of daily life in the Middle East, Lewis captured moments of relaxation, conversation, and shared hospitality.

The scene reflects a universal tradition; people coming together to eat, talk, and enjoy each other’s company much like the gatherings that mark Eid celebrations around the world.
