“if-if-if” a show about the possibility of language and exploring its boundaries curated by Chicago’s finest, Chris Reeves. It’s great to work with letters again, and reminds me perhaps I am too conservative. There are much more radical ways to go forward. Open until 10/25 Sundays 12-4pm, The Plan, 610 N Albany taken in The Plan by @lutkie

Intervention is a free sound series dedicated to sound art, ambient, and experimental music held at Innertown Pub, Home to the Arts. For the fourth installment, we are pleased to welcome Sarah Lutkenhaus, followed by reading(s) by Ryan Walach.

Sarah Lutkenhaus
Sarah Lutkenhaus is a Chicago-based interdisciplinary artist working across sound, performance, and printed media to explore emotional complexity and the instability of language. Using modular synthesis, field recordings, samples, and vocal improvisation, she builds layered compositions that push speech to the edge of abstraction, where meaning and sense of time fracture. Her work embraces the fleeting experience of liveness, crafting emotionally charged environments that heighten the tension between control and vulnerability. Drawing on archival research and collaborative exchange, she listens for overlooked histories and cultivates community through performances, publications, and collective acts of listening.

Ryan Walach
Steeped in generative/algorithmic, found, and autobiographical practice, Ryan’s work often decries the currency of poetic language in an information economy that is predicated on asemantic transactional discourse, while simultaneously and paradoxically composing intimately confabulated narratives of self- and otherhood. Ryan’s work appears on your Facebook for iPhone, LGBTQ@Facebook, Facebook for Developers, Facebook Games, and anywhere else Facebooks can be found.

FRIDAY AUG 21

BAKANTEZ formed in 2022 as the solo electronic project of Chicago based experimental composer Hanna Elliott, former member of the industrial duo HOGG. Over the years of creative development, Hanna has retained consistent themes of libidinal physicality, tactility, and tumultuous introspection. Her project Bakantez sonically consists of electro-acoustic sampling, sequencing, synthesis, and processed vocals reminiscent of sound collage, minimal wave, and noise. Her new work uses home-made objects that translate movement into tools for sonic manipulation.

SARAH LUTKENHAUS is a Chicago based an interdisciplinary artist working across sound, performance, and printed media to explore emotional complexity and the instability of language. Using modular synthesis, field recordings, samples, and vocal improvisation, she builds layered compositions that push speech to the edge of abstraction, where meaning and sense of time fracture. Drawing on archival research and collaborative exchange, she listens for overlooked histories and cultivates community through performances, publications, and collective acts of listening.

SELMA OXOR is a Monterrey-born electroclash/electropunk artist known for her dark, provocative “electro trash goth” sound. Starting as part of a trio in 2007, she launched her solo career with the User 69 EP in 2012, earning praise from Remezcla and MTV Iggy for her raw, synth-driven intensity. She’s performed at SXSW, NRMAL, and other festivals, and continues to push the underground electronic scene forward with her gritty, cyberpunk, all hardware performance style.

MISSION TO THE SUN is a Detroit-based duo (Christopher Samuels and Kirill Slavin) that weaves together post-industrial soundscapes and haunting vocals. Their music explores themes of dystopian isolation, and lost connection — perfect for an immersive, otherworldly live experience in the Motor City.

*MAJOR LAST MINUTE GIG ANNOUNCEMENT*

Amirtha Kidambi is coming to town this weekend and I put together this super last-minute bill to celebrate. Two duos, both vocals + electronics, both first time collaborations, all improvised, all happening at Marmalade THIS FRIDAY.

I’ve been a huge fan of Amirtha’s since I first started going down the rabbit hole of experimental music however many years ago. She’s one of the most fearless improvisers working today, so I’m hugely grateful she reached out and asked me to put this bill together, and that she was so open to playing with new people. Allen Moore is someone who also makes improvised music that defies every classification or categorization that anyone could foist on it, so he seemed to me like a perfect match. Working with self-pressed graphite records that he can warp and contort in every which direction, his real-time collage work and intrinsic listening makes him one of the most original voices in improvised music I’ve witnessed *anywhere*, let alone Chicago. This will be a first time meeting and I’m stoked to hear what they have in store for us.

Not only is this the first gig I’ve booked in nearly a year, but it’ll be the first time I’ve even attempted to perform music in *any* capacity since well over a year ago. I stopped doing music when grad school took over my life, and truth be told I’d felt relieved to not be thinking about it anymore. But finally getting some free time this summer gave me the bug again, and I had ideas kicking around for a while about wanting to improvise with a vocalist. I’ll be playing with my good friend of many years Sarah Lutkenhaus, one of the friendliest faces in the Chicago experimental music scene. Until yesterday I hadn’t even touched my electronics in well over a year, so we’ll see how this goes!

Huge thanks to Bill and Ishmael for stepping up and letting us do this on such short notice. Let’s do this.
