A short clip from ‘We Are Stardust’ - a new commission for University of Leeds to develop a large-scale light projection for @lightnightleeds The artwork explores research in Astrophysics and X Ray crystallography at the university.

It has been fascinating talking to Prof Alison Young and PhD researcher Conall Kavanagh about planet and star formation and supermassive black holes. I’ve also spent time in the library archives looking at the notebooks of Leeds researcher Florence Bell whose pioneering work helped to uncover the structure of DNA.

I was surprised to learn that the scientific techniques used to model structures at both scales – galaxies and DNA – have many similarities. New elements such as carbon – the basis of life on earth – were forged in space.

The work is now at the exciting final stages with sound design in process. Particles have become a visual theme running throughout linking the two strands of research.
‘We Are Stardust’ tells a visual story about how stars and planets are formed, and ultimately, how life on earth was born out of the powerful forces in the universe.

It’s been wonderful working with coder @chrisballprojects and sound artist @tjameshamilton again, both are absolutely brilliant!

‘We Are Stardust’ will be screened as a large-scale projection on the university campus during @lightnightleeds on 28th and 29th Oct. If you are in Leeds during Leeds Lights Nights drop by and say hello. It tours to Barnsley Bright Nights in Nov.

✨ SHINE Artist Spotlight: Noctilucent by @nurul.wardani

Noctilucent, is a new immersive light installation by Nurl, developed through SHINE, our emerging talent development programme. 👀 Still in development, here is a look behind the scenes!

Nurul is a lighting designer whose practice spans theatre, live events and immersive installations. Drawing on both architectural and theatrical approaches to light, her work explores atmosphere, time and our relationship with space.

Through SHINE, artists are supported via funding and mentoring to develop their creative practice, create work at a larger scale, gain experience of working in outdoor festival contexts, and build their profile within the light art sector.

Noctilucent investigates how light can shape our perception of volume and space. Using projections and haze, the installation creates ever-changing forms inspired by atmospheric phenomena and patterns found in nature, inviting audiences to experience space as something fluid, responsive and alive.

In 2026 Noctilucent will tour to:
✨ Lightpool (21-21 Nov)
✨ Light Up Lancaster (5-7 Nov)
✨ Barnsley Bright Nights (20-21 Nov)
✨ Lightwaves Salford (date tbc)

We’re excited to see Noctilucent brought to life and shared with audiences across the North of England. Find out more using the link in our bio.
