Pholiota terrestris

I’m happy to announce that this beautiful specimen has earned a spot as a winner for the 2024 MSA Student & Postdoc Photo Contest 🥳

When I found this mushroom, I was originally on the hunt for fungi that I could use for an antibiotics research project I was working on. Bending down and getting up for two hours was getting me lightheaded and I decided to take a seat on a massive tree root. That’s when I saw this early-stage Pholiota terrestris, about the size of half my thumb. As soon as I saw the scale pattern on the cap and stem, I knew it was a great opportunity to try photo-stacking for the first time.

Rhodocollybia butyracea

This was the first time I tried photo stacking (2 shots)! I’ve always wanted to try it and even took shots in different focus for some fungi just in case I ever decided on a program to use! I didn’t feel like committing to adobe light room and photoshop just yet, and the national identifiers I’ve worked with use Helicon anyways, so it’s what I know for now.

Callosamia moth caterpillar (Saturniidae family), most likely on the hunt for tree foliage 🐛

unfortunately I couldn’t identify the host plant for this one, which would’ve been a key distinguisher for the species. C. angulifera can be found feeding on tulip trees (Liriodendron tulipifera), while C. securifera obligately feed on sweetbay (Magnolia virginiana) 🍃

lanceleaf springbeauty (Claytonia lanceolata), watched over by Tahoma and friend 🏔️🐝

this perennial herb was once housed in the Portulacaceae (purslane) family but later placed in the Montiaceae family. Claytonia species may share similar characteristics in their five-petals, fleshy leaves, and duration, though there are a few annual species such as Miner’s Lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata)🥬

didn’t get to look at anything under the microscope, but some lovely saprotrophic Agaricales, Pluteus sp. (first slide), and some species of brittle stem (second slide), though i’m happy to go down the Psathyrellaceae—Coprinaceae—Agaricaceae rabbit hole with anyone patient enough😸
