Last April, @maicooper7r and I spent a few days in Transnistria (Pridnestrovye), between Tiraspol (Тирасполь) and Bender (Бендеры).

The strangest feeling was stepping into a time we had never actually lived through. We never experienced the Soviet Union, yet in Transnistria there are moments when you feel almost immersed in that atmosphere and that period, through the architecture, the monuments, the canteens, the streets, and countless details that are still surprisingly present.

Yet it doesn’t feel like a place frozen in the past. Many spaces are well kept, restored and very much alive. And perhaps that contrast is what makes it so fascinating: the past doesn’t feel like something displayed in a museum, it simply continues to coexist with everyday life.

We saw the huge Lenin statue in front of the government building, the Dom Sovetov with its Lenin bust, Suvorov Square and the monument to the founder of Tiraspol, the central park, some of the city’s churches, the countryside around Tiraspol, and the Bender Fortress. And, of course, a few beautiful Soviet-style canteens, where the food was just as good as the wonderfully retro atmosphere.

We stayed for two nights: one in an apartment hosted by an elderly couple, and the other at Hotel Russia. Two completely different experiences, but both became part of the journey.

We arrived curious to discover an unusual place. We left with the feeling that, for a few days, we had somehow stepped into another time, one we had never lived through, yet could still feel all around us.

After a long break, I’m finally back to posting, and I’m doing it right at the end of my latest trip with my partner and two fellow traveler friends, our New Year journey through Central Europe and the Baltic countries.

With the cold, and uncomfortable gloves, the motivation to keep the camera in my hands was low at first, but Tallinn truly surprised me with its authentic medieval beauty. After just a couple of shots, I decided to spend an entire day capturing this incredible old town. I hope something decent came out of it… by @luz.eduard

A sublime celestial ballet unfolds at dawn’s first blush, as the sun gracefully ascends, piercing the gossamer mists to cast a radiant, golden halo over Tikal’s ancient Temples I & II, seen through the eyes of time from Temple IV.

I was chasing waterfalls in one of Italy’s most unknown and enchanted corners of the Appenines with some friends when one of them said “I’d been wanting to hit the Azorean archipelago”. Well, me too I said, and off we went.

“It’s the Azores’ wildness—the unpredictable weather, the quick-to-anger ocean—that could save it” - I once read in a travel article, and it’s proven to be mostly true for me, as long as you avoid peak season (July-August) and keep out of Ponta Delgada and the most accessible hot springs. Do that and you’ll mostly be alone exploring trails across all the nine islands born of ancient volcanoes.

Hiking up densely forested river canyon, scrambling over boulders, hopping across raging waters on slippery rocks, ducking under fallen trees dislodged by mudslides all felt like we were some forest ninjas. The treat we were looking for was usually always some precious waterfall. And yes, there were quite a few knee-first-into-rock landings followed by stoic silence and silent swearing… and that’s part of the fun.

“The love of wilderness is more than a hunger for what is always beyond reach; it is also an expression of loyalty to the earth, the earth which bore us and sustains us, the only paradise we shall ever know, the only paradise we ever need, if only we had the eyes to see” Edward Abbey by @luz.eduard
