writing about knights, gods, and other deadly things 🍀🌙🐾

if you know me at all, you know I’ve struggled with writing for the past 6+ months. I’ve been writing for over a decade, but after failing in the query trenches (amongst other things) I went in a quick downward spiral. It took me from November-April to finally find a book that allowed me to write without constraint. My brain still isn’t perfect and never will be, and the book shows that. At the end of the day, I wrote a book for me. One I love, one I will edit to my heart’s end and try my best to get published, even if I know it’s a hard sell. #medievalfantasy #authorsofinstagram #writergram #firstdraft #fantasygram by @lvmadigan

The aesthetic and their quotes🪞 🩻⏳ I’ve had this idea for 3 years now, and it’s gone through countless revisions of only the idea because it has so many passageways, so many lost ideas. As I’ve learned I’m still in my writing slump, I think it’s important to challenge myself to write the book I’ve been scared to. I could write one easier. An easier idea, easier plot, easier execution. But if I’m going to write a 5th book, it might as well be my best 💜 by @lvmadigan

the quote is from hekate by nikita gill—that book changed something in me. Greek mythology always seems to. It did when I was a child and it does now 🏛️ by @lvmadigan

Is draft two scary? Yes. Is it scarier than not having a drafted book at all? Also yes. #authorsofig #medievalfantasy #fantasywriters #writergram #querying by @lvmadigan

YAY!!! We’re officially over the halfway point, which means we’re nearing the end…in only 3 weeks. Crazy, if I do say so myself. It’s the least I could do after a 6 month creative block.

Please ignore the Hamilton song. Or don’t.

I think the best thing I’ve done with this draft is delete the things I know I’m not keeping and starting over. I know a lot of people say to just get the words on the page and fix it later (which is true and works for a lot of people - including my first 3 books), but I’ve since learned this it only makes for much heavier developmental editing later on, and makes it much harder for me to connect all the scenes and have the motivation to fix everything. I’ve learned it works much better for me to rewrite everything I know I would delete immediately in a second draft. I don’t, personally, see a point in keeping someone I dislike so much I want to delete it as soon as I write it.

Sometimes this is the beginning of a chapter and I have to keep restarting until something sticks, and if I write an entire chapter that technically WORKS, but I don’t love and doesn’t really accomplish anything towards the plot or characters, I usually scrap it. I usually wait a day on this if I can’t decide, and if I keep thinking about how much I don’t like it, I’ll put it in a separate folder and rewrite it. It may take more time to rewrite an entire chapter, but it lessens the time I’ll have to figure it out in the second draft.

Anyway, I apologize for the rant! I am very much loving this book and feeling the need to share my advice :)
