Music without lyrics leaves space for thought, for reflection.
A study released in 2023, Should We Turn Off the Music? Music with Lyrics Interferes with Cognitive Tasks, highlights the impact of lyrics on cognitive function. Our brains process lyrics using the “phonological loop,” basically the inner voice you hear when reading.

Based on the research, silence was the best condition for studying, and the difference between silence and instrumental music was only marginal.

But what the paper didn’t test for was why we still choose to listen to music while we read, work, study and create.
Music is a powerful tool for emotional regulation. To me, it’s like the deep hues in a sunset, warm, the perfect ending to a day.

I want to hear y’all thoughts! Maybe this will be my next Substack 😂😂

What do you prefer when you’re reading, silence, instrumentals, or lyrics?
