Repost @design @ceyadams 🖌️ Artist and NYC native @ceyadams (Cey Adams) rose from the legendary downtown graffiti movement of the 70s and 80s. “When I came downtown, I met Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Futura, Crash, Lady Pink—and we just became like a band of creative misfits,” he says. “We were doing something very unconventional, and we all had to forge our own path. We didn’t have mentors, we didn’t have guides. We had to figure everything out by trial and error. We had each other, but we still had to figure things out for ourselves.” As the founding creative director of @defjam and the creator of the Beastie Boys’ iconic graffiti logo—among countless album covers and logos with legends like Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, The Notorious B.I.G., Run DMC and Mary J. Blige—Cey crafted the look and feel that defined hip-hop’s golden era. This week during @artbasel Miami Beach, Cey will be celebrating the vibrant story of his work with DEPARTURE - 40 Years of Art and Design, a retrospective at the Museum of Graffiti’s (@museumofgraffiti) @the.art.of.hip.hop, presented by @spotify, that is on view till March 2025. “It’s a little journey of my career, from when I started as a teenager all the way through the 80s and 90s, right up to the present day,” says Cey. “There are quite a few pieces that I made in the 80s that I was lucky enough to be able to borrow from the collectors that bought them back when I was a kid.” Whether creating himself or mentoring the next generation, Cey finds joy in the making process. That really is the only thing that matters,” he says. “Being here in the studio, making stuff, laughing with my son, and just really enjoying the time that we have together.
