Randi Charo Levine is an American arts advocate, author, and former U.S. Ambassador to Portugal who is widely recognized for championing cultural diplomacy as a tool for strengthening international relations. As Ambassador, she led efforts to enhance the diplomatic, commercial, educational, and defense collaborations between Portugal and the United States – yet Ambassador Levine also made the arts a central pillar of her diplomatic work. Ambassador Levine curated and launched an Arts in Embassies exhibition at Casa Carlucci, uniting 29 American artists and Portuguese counterparts to foster dialogue between the two countries through visual arts and strengthen people-to-people ties. Under her leadership, the Embassy convened cultural programming that brought communities together through shared creativity and conversation, including panel discussions, artist presentations, and public events addressing mutual challenges and aspirations. Ambassador Levine has served on the boards of major cultural and academic institutions in New York City, including the Roundabout Theatre Company, NYU Langone Health, the High Line, the Anna Wintour Costume Center, the National Portrait Gallery, the New Museum, and the Meridian International Center. Ambassador Levine is a Distinguished Fellow in the Transatlantic Security Initiative of the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security. She is a member of the Council for Foreign Relations, and was named Honorary Professor of Art and Diplomacy at Universidade Católica Portuguesa and a Visiting Fellow at Arizona State University’s Institute of Politics. Amb. Randi Charno Levine will give the lecture "Cultural Diplomacy Today: A World in Need" at 17:00 in Sala de Exposições (2nd floor of Library building) and chair the panel discussion with Ana Sokoloff, Deborah Kass, and Lisa Phillips, "Who Gets to Decide? Deborah Kass is a New York–based painter and sculptor whose work fuses Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism, and popular culture to examine identity, gender, and how art history has been written. Her landmark Warhol Project, begun in 1992, recast Warhol’s visual language around women artists and personal heroes, and her monumental OY/YO sculpture became a beloved Brooklyn landmark, with a version now at the Brooklyn Museum. Her work is held by MoMA, the Whitney, the Guggenheim, the National Gallery of Art, and the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, she received an honorary doctorate there in 2025. Deborah Kass will be in conversation with Lisa Phillips and Ana Sokoloff, chaired by Amb. The Panel Discussion ”Who Gets to Decide? Cultural Value, Institutional Power and Global Art Markets” will take place on 2 November at 18:30, Auditorium 511 (Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics). The panelists are arts specialist Ana Sokoloff, artist Deborah Kass, and Director Emerita of the New Museum, Lisa Phillips. The panel will be moderared by Amb. Randi Charno Levine. Artists, galleries, collectors, museums, auction houses, funders and governments all help decide what art is seen, valued and preserved. So when their interests clash, who has the final say? This evening panel brings together views from diplomacy, institutional leadership, artistic practice and the art market. The panelists take that question from five angles: who assigns value, who holds power, who gives work legitimacy, who pays, and who builds relationships across borders. Drawing on decades of experience, they look at how museums grow without losing their purpose, how artists protect their independence once they succeed, and how money and influence shape culture. They also ask whether all of these activities are, in the end, forms of cultural diplomacy. The program closes with questions from students. The event is open to public. Ambassador Randi Charno Levine will give the lecture ”Cultural Diplomacy Today: A World in Need” on 2 November 17:00-18:00, Sala de Exposições, UCP (2. floor of the Library building), with the participation of Ana Sokoloff, Deb Kass and Lisa Phillips. International alliances are shifting, and the cultural ties that support them are under strain. In this lecture, former U.S. Ambassador to Portugal Randi Charno Levine looks at the role of cultural diplomacy in today’s geopolitical climate. She draws on her time in Lisbon, where her contemporary Art in Embassies exhibition, Celebrating Diversity, used the Ambassador’s Residence as a space for dialogue on democracy, representation and freedom of expression. She then asks what happens when governments change what they are willing to show about themselves, and what that means for artists, museums, curators and a nation’s credibility abroad. Artist Deborah Kass, New Museum Director Emerita Lisa Phillips and art advisor Ana Sokoloff join the conversation throughout. The session ends with practical lessons for students who want to build intentional, sustainable people-to-people ties through culture. The event is open to public. 📙 The Art Economy: In Pursuit of New Models. A list of (traditional, alternative, and hybrid) economic models. Co-edited by Hajer Khader @bairroarabe, Sarah Zammit Munro @sarahzmunro, and Christian Debono @stjanu This publication is a compilation of economic models developed in the framework of an economy lab of Institution(ing)s, co-edited by PhD and MA students of The Lisbon Consortium, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in the framework of the Artivism Seminar, under the coordination of Luísa Santos. @luisa___santos___ @universidadecatolicaportuguesa @fchcatolica @lxconsortium “The need for alternative economic models has led to a complete reshuffling of the production chain in the art industry. Artists, institutions, and audiences are now part of a borderless space where everyone’s roles can vary over time, overlap with some members, or, if necessary, be combined. This is what happens when crowdfunding is used to raise micro-funding for a given project, or when the multiple shareholders of a structure achieve collaborative funding. The same logic applies when resource-sharing networks are proposed for museums, theatres, or orchestras to leverage each other’s assets at a time of resource scarcity and an environmental breakpoint. The popularity of reactionary ideologies combined with the fact that a handful of multibillionaires own most of both the mass media and the financial resources of our planet questions not only the art scene, but all of us as a human community. How do we remain free? To move, to speak, to protest, or to create. How do we ensure that greed does not become the main driver of art institutions? This territorial extension of art institutions into intra-social collaborative structures, whether perennial or ephemeral, allows us to envision art not only as a cultural or economic practice but also as a driver for social change. Art is a collective, seamless lived experience. Could the political and economic constraints of our time give rise to this utopia?” - Excerpt from the introduction Graphic Design: Íris Sousa @iris_made_it This publication is available on Institution(ing)s website; link in bio. by @lxconsortium
