When my sister called me as I was planning Dres Legacy of Life celebration, she had one very direct request. She said “we need to do something special!”. I said okay, wsup? She said “idk what, but we need to something special. Like we did with Dad…a tribute or something.” She said it was mine to figure out and immediately this came to me. How do we make everyone truly feel Dres love and light so majorly in this moment. I remembered the video I had with Ma retelling his birth randomly at the house this past Mothers Day, the difficult and poetic obituary reading, and then the Sibling Tribute at the end I think captured it beautifully…and it’s undoubtedly my most memorable moment of that day (the last two mins make me laugh and cry at the same time) Happy Dre Day 2022!! Aye Dre, we love you fool!! #LoveLikeDre #LLDRE by @lyfwithcosey

To my Baby Brother. DeAndre Montrel

I chose to wait until I felt better to write this; experiencing this has been the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. But I didn’t want to make permanent my pain with a post reflecting my hurt. I had to wait, until I felt lighter, because that is what you deserve. Light. Dre, while i am still in disbelief that you aren’t here, I am comforted in knowing that there was nothing left unsaid. I dont have to regret the time we didnt spend because we spent so much time together. Im not stuck with shame wishing we had more moments because we had soooo many and all the time, and the moments we had were intentional. You knew exactly how i felt about you, how deeply I loved you, and the extent to which Id go for you. And yeap. I knew the same. You made me feel like I was the greatest big brother, ever, stealing my clothes, borrowing my car, eating my leftovers, and asking for stuff just because i had it. Since you were born, you kept us on our feet…and as you grew into manhood, you gave us space to rest while you promised us that “I got it”. You were my brother, my son, my friend, my road trip partner, my mentee, my “get these kids”, and every single dream i had for my future, literally every single one i had, included you. I will miss that beaming smile of yours, your laughter, your jokes… I never knew how much I needed you until that Christmas eve in 1993, and now, I have no idea how I’ll do life without you. Im heartbroken, but not hopeless. Devastated, but not in despair. I will get thru this moment, because I choose to finish… Thank you for every lesson you taught me and for those you so patiently accepted from me. I know you called yourself second oldest boy, but you were such a dope baby bro. And now, baby brother, you belong to forever, and forever belongs to you. I will miss everything about you because everything about you was good, and we dont miss what aint good. Ill say your name every day, and promise to sit with and keep our memories alive for as long as life endures. I love you sooo much Dre, and the world knew. Ill never cease to love you and love like you. #122493 #81022 #LLDre #lovelikedre @brock_brockenberry by @lyfwithcosey

!!!CALL FOR STORY CONTRIBUTORS!!!

This Is The LYF is inviting Black men who have experienced the death of another Black man they loved to participate in our first storytelling series, I Miss My Brother.

Whether he was your biological brother, chosen brother, father, son, friend, mentor, partner, or another meaningful presence in your life, we are seeking brothers willing to reflect on the man, the life they shared, the grief they continue to carry, and the lessons, memories, and love that remain.

This is not simply a conversation about death. It is an opportunity to speak his name, honor his life, and explore how both his presence and absence has shaped you.

This Is The LYF.

When I tell people about my momma, it’s impossible not to smile. Beyond being the strongest woman I know, someone who has and continues to open her home, hands, and heart for others - without complaint BTW - she is also just pure joy! Literally always smiling, singing, laughing, and being light…and for someone who has endured so much, to still choose a life of light is profoundly inspiring.

I owe so much of me to her and I promise Im going to retire her, pay off the house, and bless her with a nice monthly gift of gratitude $$ so she can live her life fully! Thats my boo @bbb_cdc love you momma by @lyfwithcosey

Update and Reflection!!!

“This Is The LYF” will uncover and celebrate the beauty in the life experiences of Black men. Dre continues to inspire me, and my love for him continues to grow despite his physical absence. Grief aint all “bad”. by @lyfwithcosey

Some answers to questions are actions. Far too long, I’ve been a man of dreams. Vision is beautiful, but often rendered useless by the feelings that it triggers, and the actions those feelings hinder.

Faith isn’t about not asking questions…it’s not even about having all the answers. Faith is the willingness to walk even with those questions and without those answers.

Join me in this journey.

Avoidance is often framed as an unhealthy practice, but there’s definitely sometimes where it serves beneficially. For me, in this way, Ive kept myself from the overwhelm of grief that feels too heavy. What yall think? by @lyfwithcosey
