The Victoria Art Gallery Bath hosts Bath Society of Artists Open 2026. I'm very happy that Study in Form, my large painting, top left, made it through the judging rounds. The guest artist is Basil Beattie. On till 7 November. This is the 121st open so I can feel the hand of art history on my shoulder! Some really good works by contemporary artists are on show.

Terry Frost. Blue Black and White is a painting I always search for at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester. It was gifted by George and Ann Dannatt. Painted in 1960-61 when Frost was at Leeds, it's his response to snow in the dales. I've only just found that out. What I respond to is the series of verticals, stacking up like books. Terry's family were visiting the StonemanCollins major show this last weekend. I wasn't there at the same time this time but always feel more personally aquainted with him than I really am through those lovely domestic scenes of Terry's family life, photographed at that same period. The art world is full of associations of the six degrees of separation kind.

A sensational 20th century British art event for this weekend only at Chaffeymoor Grange, Bourton, courtesy of the dazzlingly talented partnership, StonemanCollins. Given the rampant colour of some of the pairings of artworks and rooms elsewhere this is low key but includes a work by a favourite sculptor, Robert Adams. This is a steel maquette on a mantelpiece with a Tracey Emin above. Don't miss this show. It's spectacular.

One of the five shows I'm currently in is at Corsham. Pound Art Centre bursts at the seams with vitality. I met the director, Ruth, who was excited about the sculpture exhibition , Touch, by makers of the Cotswold Sculptors Association. Carolune, the curator was passionate about allowing viewers to touch the exhibits. The photos from the preview night were fabulous with so many people doing just that. In this image, you'll see my own piece Stack, in which people can change the configuration of the work, though I have a preferred option. You'll also see thd high vis strips employed throughout for sight impaired people. There's a braille guide too. When I visited on a Wednesday lunchtime there were 20 people in the gallery. Fantastic! #poundarts #poundartcentre #corsham #cotswoldsculptorsassociation #contemporarysculpture by @lynnbaxter694

Study in Form will be shown at Bath Art Society Open in its 131st annual exhibition at the Victoria Art Gallery from Saturday. I can't wait to see how it looks in situ.

Let me know how you did! I've learnt to realise it's an achievement to get through the initial round and not see it as a mark of shame if I didn't make it through the second stage. Entering makes it possible! Catch you at the private view?

Long Barrow, Stone and Light, at the private view of Conceal /Reveal at The Atkinson Gallery. It was a brilliant and crowded.event. The painting distills the essence of West Kennet long barrow. It's hidden from view as you zip past on the A4, all eyes drawn to the equally mysterious Silbury Hill on the other side of the road. This part of Wiltshire is a thin place where ancient history is discernible just below the surface. The underlying chalk breaks through the turf and peppers the worked land with stones. Our ancestors made these sacred places, sending us enigmatic clues about themselves.
On till October 15 and showing the works of 75 artists.
