On January 1st this year, my cousin took his own life. He'd fought with his ideations for years. He was one of the best people I know and that I'll ever get to know in my life. He was loyal beyond measure. He was kind and self-sacrificing. He loved The Mountain Goats. He loved arapaimas. He got really into hockey towards the end of his life and was in the most loving relationship he'd ever had.

Isaac was one of my best friends. No one has ever understood me like he did, and I doubt anyone ever will. Even when he was in Texas with my tía, whenever I was struggling he would facetime me and just sit with me through it. He was someone I could look forward to talking with and that wouldn't flake on me. He loved all the ugliest parts of myself that I never could. I sincerely would not be alive today if I hadn't had him in my life.

Since January 1st, I have not been able to grieve. Life is moving so fast that I don't get much of a chance to sit with it. It feels unsafe to sit with it, but I know I have to. For myself and for him.

A lot of people think that having people who love you and knowing they love you will prevent suicide. It can, but it doesn't always. Life is bigger than those that love you. Mental landscapes are bigger than reality and what we know. You can know and feel that people love you, but it doesn't decrease the suffering you feel or the voice in your head that tells you "this is how you can fix it". It's a lot more complicated than that. Isaac had tried everything he had available to him to get better, to feel better. It wasn't enough.

Suicide prevention is a lot more than just making sure people feel loved. It requires equality and safety. It requires access to healthcare. It requires destigmatization of the mental health conditions that are viewed as disruptive to society. It requires love and community. It requires consistency. It requires education, freedom, choices. So much of this Isaac was robbed of. Things have to change politically and systemically if we want to prevent suicide. by @lynncook71837

Rivers Alive Year 2

We picked up a truck mud flap and an entire kayak paddle, winning the largest and most unusual piece of trash picked up. They gave us a tumbler, stickers, bug repelant hair ties, and candy!
