Finished demo from last weeks Purely Pastels class. This is a set up of my own grouping of objects that are important to me. They sit on the shelf in my lounge and one morning the early sunshine caught them in a golden ray of light and I loved the shadows that were cast onto the matte gold wall. Still life is not a genre I’m really used to doing but it’s great for sharpening up your observational drawing!
Calling this one “Shelfish” - a terrible pun but I couldn’t help it! 40x30cm Unison and Nupastels on PastelMat. #stilllife #medinaglass #starfish #scottishart #pastel by @lynnhowarthart

First new painting in a couple of weeks just off the dusty easel this afternoon. Been wanting to have a go at this magnificent Snow Leopard since I saw him in Melbourne Zoo, Australia two years ago. I was squinting into the enclosure in the hot sun for what seemed like ages and only saw him when he woke up from his sleep and moved his head. He was so amazingly camouflaged I didn’t notice him until that slight movement! What an incredible sight to see!
I’m calling this one “Now you see me!” Unison pastels and Caran d’Ache pastel pencils on Anthracite PastelMat which is brilliant for painting rocks! It is 30 x 40cm. #melbournezoo #snowleopard #pastelpainting #scottishart #wildlifeart by @lynnhowarthart

Woo hoo! “A Bear Called Ah” is finally here!
I’m so delighted to share my pastel created for this beautiful children’s book by author Lorraine Johnston which features the work of 12 amazing Scottish artists! With 100% of proceeds going to Ayrshire Hospice please support their incredible work by buying a copy! It’s on sale now through Ayrshire Hospice.

https://shop.ayrshirehospice.org/products/a-bear-called-ah

My particular bear is Christopher bear - a bear made out of my late husbands Hawaiian shirts as a Memory Bear. Christopher bear lives in his shed amongst all his tools - a place Chris loved and was always happy making or mending things. This is for his two beautiful granddaughters who he never met and I hope this story will help keep his memory alive for my gorgeous girls
It was a great pleasure to be asked along with so many fabulously talented artists to create a painting to bring Lorraine’s story to life.
It’s a beautifully produced book and a fantastic way to help raise valuable funds for Ayrshire Hospice.

First of many paintings from our trip to beautiful Anglesey back in June. The inspiration I felt was just incredible! This one was inspired by photos I took at Newborough National Nature Reserve. Absolutely stunning scenery as far as the eye can see with gorgeous beach and forest walks everywhere.

Been dying to paint this portrait of my wee ray of sunshine - my darling granddaughter Cassie, since I took a photo of her looking at a photo of her Mum and her big sister Kalli as a baby! As she pointed to the photo she said “Is this me, Gigi?” It was such a sweet moment we shared. I loved the shadows falling across her toes and across the living room onto the wall opposite us. Just one @unisoncolour dark brown pastel and the rest in @carandache pastel pencils! This certainly was a labour of love!

Exciting news to share! I have just received this in the post all the way from the USA!

It contained my Master Circle medallion and certificate which is the pinnacle of my career to date as a fine artist. When I started entering the twice yearly International Association of Pastel Societies exhibitions back in 2020 I strove to produce the best work I could and for each entry accepted I gained a point towards Master Circle status. This was and still is considered one of the highest accolades in the world of soft pastel. IAPS is an incredible organisation whose aim is to champion and promote the beautiful medium of soft pastel and supports pastel artists all over the globe.

My grateful thanks to IAPS and President Richard McKinley, for this recognition and for such an amazing medallion which I will treasure always! So very happy and still pinching myself!
My dream has finally come true! #iaps #pastel #mastercircle #proudmoment❤️ #grateful by @lynnhowarthart

Hot off the easel today is a larger scale landscape of Wroxton Spring inspired by my lovely friend Mark Shephards photo which he kindly allowed me to use!
Wroxton is a quintessentially English village in northern Oxfordshire, England, located about 3 miles west of Banbury full of history going back to the 11th Century! I’d absolutely have loved to paint this gorgeous scene from life so will definitely have to arrange a visit!
I loved the bright sparkle of the water and the feeling of utter peace and tranquility that this stirred in me.

Just back from the most fabulous four days away in stunning Anglesey with our wonderful friends Gareth, Annette, Michele and Paul. Gareth and I wanted to celebrate achieving our Master Circle Pastelist status with the International Association of Pastel Artists (IAPS) so as we couldn’t attend the convention in Albuquerque in person, we decided to have our own alternative pastel party in beautiful North Wales.
We asked our mutual friend Michele Ashby, who achieved Master Circle back in 2022, to do the honours of presenting us with our super cool replica medallions designed and 3D printed by our artist friend Stephen Fuller. As you’ll see in the photos and video Gareth and I felt incredibly honoured to achieve this status as it’s a huge thing in the world of pastel!
Spending those four days together walking the stunning coastline of Anglesey, chatting about art, life and love was truly life affirming, inspiring and utterly joyful. Lots of laughter, good food, singing at every opportunity and generally enjoying each others company making memories to last a lifetime! #friendship #art #goodtimes #love #lifeisgood by @lynnhowarthart

Hot off the dusty easel is Tuesdays live Zoom demo for the wonderful Pastel Society of Australia on a theme of “Shapes - crazy but Captivating”! Isn’t it wonderful how technology has made this even possible? I also had the enviable task of doing a critique for 44 of their members and choosing the winners in each category! So hard to pick as they were all absolutely gorgeous!
What a lovely chatty group of truly excellent pastel artists to demo for - I certainly had to be on it that’s for sure! Loads of interesting questions fired at me throughout the two hours of the demo and just a few more studio hours to finish it off today.
I’m calling this one “In all their Autumnal Glory” inspired by a photo I took in the beautiful Loire valley last October. Rob and I had spotted this lovely canal walk near to our village and spent a couple of glorious hours taking in the scenery as we walked. I loved the reflections of the trees in the water and the gently floating leaves - it felt kind of abstract in a way so required a looser style of painting. This one was completed with Girault pastels on PastelMat Board and it’s 50 x 35cm. Please feel free to share! @pastelsocietyofaustralia_ @pastelsgirault_officiel #autumn #pastel #scottishart #reflections #autumnleaves by @lynnhowarthart

So I’ve just spent the past three weeks sorting out my absolute tip of a studio which was full of stuff from my parents house, my in laws house and family stuff accumulated over the past 40 years! Anyway while tidying up I came across this pastel I started way back in 2023. I really wasn’t happy with it at the time and kept putting it away in my plan chest then taking it out every month or so for a few months then promptly forgot all about it!
As soon as I saw it this morning I knew right away what needed fixing - it was something about her eyes and mouth - they were way too dark and lacked the emotion I was looking for. I grabbed some pastels and set about fixing her. Inspired by a photo I took on the Tube in London many years ago - this beautiful young lady was completely lost in her thoughts and I wondered about her story! Where was she going? What was she doing once she got there? I do love a narrative! I’m calling it “A Million Miles from Monument” - if anyone recognises her can you get her to get in touch with me and I’ll send her a print to thank her for inspiring me!

Thrilled to find that “Finnish Interior” is off to its new forever home selling on the opening night of the Paisley Art Institutes 137th Annual Exhibition! It’s just lovely knowing that people are happy to part with their hard earned money to buy my work! I’ll really miss it though as I had it up in my studio since I completed it late last year. Funny how some pieces really resonate with you eh? @pai_1876 #finland #interior #pastel #scottishart #artists by @lynnhowarthart
