On my last night in Kentucky scouting for my grad film, I found a spot called Salt River. Guided by mindfulness signs made by the University of Kentucky, my thoughts slowed down and I was momentarily completely present. With this project, synchronicity seems to be guiding me and my intuition forward. I keep receiving signs from the universe that I’m on the right path (literal signs on a path, see pic 4 by Salt River).

And I know I wouldn’t be in this place without one very important person. In college, I had a professor who completely changed my life. She got me excited about movies when I barely knew what I wanted to do. I’d go to her office and she would hand me DVD’s from her personal collection that opened my eyes to what cinema could be. As I was dreaming of becoming a documentary filmmaker, she introduced me to Alex Gibney and other masters of the form. And then one day, she showed me Rosetta — a drama by the Dardenne brothers, former documentarians turned dramatists. That film was a revelation for me and has become one of the primary inspirations for Salt River, (yes I changed the title.)

Michelle pushed me to write and make movies. She believed in me. And after college, she remained the person from the University of Minnesota I kept in touch with most. Earlier this summer, she passed away from cancer. This film is for her. We’re dedicating Salt River to her memory. Love you, Michelle 💙 taken in Salt River, Kentucky by @lynnsanity37

A couple years ago I went to Berlin for a film festival. While I had originally planned to attend as many @berlinale screenings as possible, I inadvertently spent all my time in Berlin’s night clubs. Thus began my hot and heavy but also spiritual love affair with techno music.

This past summer @themarshajean put me in touch with Maciej @tr_stranger_ who had told her techno was his “meditation.” Once we got to talking it was immediately obvious that we both hear/feel techno in the same way. Maciej graciously chatted with me about his pretty unique relationship to the music. @willlbefree captured the audio @arjun._.a shot it on an ancient camcorder and @ju.huahua cut it together on an even older iMac and together we created a little documentary.

Finished post-production on this film a week before starting @thelondonfilmschool and haven’t had much of a chance to look back since. Alas a year and a half later, spring break has allowed for a little self-reflection and I came to the profound realization that these stills deserve a home on my instagram.
