Dear Karate,

This is not an official goodbye. I know I will see you again, just in a different role. Still, I say farewell as an athlete. I have done everything I wanted to do and given everything I had. As an athlete, I truly cherished every moment of the journey.

I wasn’t born with natural talent. I had to work incredibly hard.. literally blood, sweat, and tears. But what a beautiful journey it has been. I started as a little girl and grew into the woman I am today. I traveled all over the world. Together with my father, I went through the entire Olympic cycle. At 23, I won the bronze medal in the worldchampionships 🤩, followed by many more special achievements.

The fear of stopping was big. But you feel when the time is right, and for me, that time is now. I look toward the future with excitement. I hope to help shape young champions at my club and give them what my coaches once gave me.

I want to thank my dear club teammates, coaches, national team teammates, former athletes, sponsors, supporters, and of course my boyfriend and family for all their support. They saw me at my very best, but also at my worst. I reached incredible highs, but I also went through deep lows in my career.

Vandaag, precies een jaar geleden. 🥋❤️

Ik heb altijd ontzettend hard gewerkt als atleet. En eerlijk is eerlijk: ik ben nooit de makkelijkste atleet geweest om in de buurt te zijn. Niet op de mat, maar ook niet altijd als ik thuiskwam. Mijn leven draaide jarenlang om één ding: mijn doel. Om wat ik wilde bereiken. Soms betekende dat dat alles en iedereen daarvoor moest wijken.

En juist daarom betekent deze dag zoveel voor mij.

Na een lange periode zonder winst, zonder resultaat en met momenten waarop ik mezelf flink ben tegengekomen, kwam een jaar geleden alles samen. Het harde werk betaalde zich uit. Alles wat ik had gegeven, alle trainingen, teleurstellingen, twijfels en offers kwamen op dat moment samen. Het was één van de mooiste pieken uit mijn carrière. Een moment dat ik nooit meer zal vergeten. ❤️

Vandaag kijk ik daar met enorm veel trots op terug. Niet alleen op het resultaat, maar vooral op de weg ernaartoe.

En misschien is het mooiste wel dat ik mijn liefde voor karate, mijn gevoel voor de sport en mijn strijdlust nu mag doorgeven aan de volgende generatie. Wat ik jarenlang voor mezelf deed, mag ik nu voor anderen betekenen.

Ondertussen groeit onze kleine jongen heel mooi in mijn buik 🩵
En ik weet nu al: op een dag zal hij trots zijn op zijn moeder. Niet alleen om wat ik heb bereikt, maar vooral om wie ik ben geworden.
