We’re celebrating an important milestone and looking ahead to the impact that Lyon Square will have for generations to come.

This project broke ground in October of 2023, and today, Lyon Square is still bringing people together.

TOMORROW is an inverted 2008 Ford Fusion, resting in Lyon Square. Come see the work and join for an informal conversation about the piece, the inspiration behind it and the journey it was to bring the sculpture to life.

Sunday, September 27 | 3:30–4:30pm Lyon Square, 296 Lyon St NW Free, outdoors, drop in and stay as long as you like.

Seejon Czaplicki is a filmmaker and artist based in Los Angeles and Grand Rapids, MI. With a BFA in film directing, his work engages in dialogues shaped by the duality of the lived experience. He approaches creation as a communal endeavor, a yearning to catharsis and an exploration towards the unique, the temporary, and the beautiful. He leads System on Objects and is currently in post-production on his debut feature film, Cul De Sac.

Isabella Werschky is a film production designer with a growing interest in experiential installations and other temporary spaces. Her work is rooted in curiosity about how environments shape human behavior and a desire to translate abstract ideas into physical form. She aims to create collective moments of reflection and connection through shaping sensory input.

Multidisciplinary artist; Hailey Johnson delves into the invisible forces that shape human experience. With a BA in sculpture and psychology, she combines her fascination with the mind and materiality. Inspired by language, spiritual consciousness, and motherhood, the concept of unseen threads that bind us is a common theme in Hailey’s work. taken in Lyon Square by @lyonsquaregr

TOMORROW is today!

What started as a simple conversation, grew into something that felt mostly impossible. Could we invert a car, in downtown Grand Rapids, safely and with approval and let it remain on view to the public 24/7? This impulse grew out of a continuation of dialogues with Isabella and observations of our current world, realities, experiences… to reflect on expectations, promises and anticipations- conscious and unconscious ones, those that inhabit our intellectual world, our built environments, our atmospheric realities that become confronted by the absurd and unexpected inversion of those expectations. TOMORROW, as a 2008 Ford Fusion, in the auto state of Michigan, became a contemplation on those inversions, and hopefully as you circumnavigate the piece and walk around it, notice the cracked windshield, the inversion scars, the broken mirror, the upside-down cab that once took someone to work, dropped a kid off at school, went for dinner and a night out with friends, it might create within you a pause, a thought, an exploration

TOMORROW opens Sept 18 at Lyon Square @lyonsquaregr and will be on view through Oct 3 for ArtPrize @artprize in between the Devos Place and the Amway Grand Plaza

TOMORROW is an inverted automobile, encountered streetside, abstracted from its context and presented as an object of perceptual disruption. The car does not move. It does not go anywhere. It simply exists, upside-down, in a space where it would otherwise be unremarkable.

This inversion urges a contemplation: Is the car upside-down, or are we? In suspending the familiar, TOMORROW offers an awe-based encounter with one’s own assumptions and the structures we inherit and carry forward.

The title is anticipation. Tomorrow is the direction we always face. It is a promise, a deferral, a new day. Here, that forward orientation is literally inverted. What we find instead is the present, strange and unavoidable.
