This piece is especially important to me because I started tattooing out of curiosity. Initially, it was a job to put on my resume once I eventually decide to pursue corporate design. Tattooing was a side quest. Coming from a Filipino first gen background I was expecting to move on from tattooing. It didn’t become a viable path until I moved studios, and it didn’t fully solidify until I went down the rabbit hole of learning about my roots, brushing up on Tagalog and learning Baybayin. The cultural preservation of that pre-colonial practice of tattooing eventually became my mission once I grounded myself in that understanding and intention.

And with that I would love to keep doing Baybayin script for other FilAms wanting to reconnect with their culture and to tangibly display their identity 🇵🇭🏝️🌺🤍

I love tattooing Baybayin last name pieces BUT! Pre-colonial Filipinos did not have surnames! This isn’t news and I’m not a scholar. In November 1849, appointed Governor General, Narciso Clavería y Zaldúa issued a decree that forced natives to adopt Spanish surnames in a bid to make the census easier. Despite the strict implementation of the program, some indigenous natives did manage to keep their indigenous names as a surname.
