Last week I stayed the night at the hospital with mom for a couple days after her 3rd brain surgery… she was resting still so I took that as an opportunity to walk to my car get some fresh Air and reset the clothes in my backpack for the day and grab a coffee from the cafe downstairs … I was gone maybe 15-20 minutes… I return to her room and a man is feeding her breakfast… confused I say “oh I can do that”… “I haven’t met you before” … he says who stayed here last night gesturing to my stuff scattered around the room… I said “I said here”…. Again I offered to feed her myself and he says “I can feed my wife”… I said “you’re wife?”…. “This is my mom”… he said “no this is my Wife.”… I say “this is my Mom, And YOU ARE NOT MY DAD.”…. He says… “this is Ann Schreer”…. I say no “This is Pam Trier.”… we both repeat ourselves a few times over… then I realize our Visitor Badges both say room 333….so in my head I’ve reasoned that I haven’t slept enough and am now experiencing vivid hallucinations… reaching for and touching any wall around me I back out of the room… a student nurse is sitting outside the door I say “that’s not my dad!”….confused she says “thats not her husband?”….i say “I’ve never met that man before in my life” then desperately ask her to look me in the eyes and tell me this is real cause I’m convinced this is a fever dream or something…. She is to stunned to speak… I tell the man “let’s find your wife, lets find Ann.” … directing him towards to the main nurses station I go back to make sure mom is okay …. Finding him down the hallway he shouts while pointing at me “she knows what’s going on!” They have now changed his badge to room 321 together him and I find that room and return him to where he belongs to Ann his wife who was resting and did not look a thing like my Mom Pam…him and I now hug knowing this story will live with us forever…. And that is the story of how I gained “my other daddy”…. As I have affectionately called him since …even to his face and it always gets a chuckle out of him. by @lysssalou
