The murder of Yeardley Love drew national attention not only because both Love and her killer, George Huguely V, were senior lacrosse players at the University of Virginia, but also because Huguely came from a wealthy, fifth-generation Washington, D.C., family whose fortune originated in the century-old Galliher & Huguely lumber business. Educated at elite private schools and raised amid substantial privilege, Huguely had displayed a pattern of alcohol-fueled aggression and entitled behavior before the killing, including previous violent incidents that resulted in relatively limited consequences. Commentators and journalists have cited his upbringing and social status as part of a broader culture of privilege that appeared to shield him from accountability until the fatal assault on Love in May 2010. by @lytinsley
