This one hurts. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Not now. Not when there was so much more life for her to live and so much more joy for her to bring the world. Alexis Esparza was one of my best friends for over 20 years— a beautiful, vibrant, hilarious, witty, smart, insightful, creative, talented, and caring human being. Someone who I experienced many firsts with. Someone who I could tell anything to and never feel judged or alone. Someone who made me laugh like no other and who made me feel like the funniest person in the world when I made her laugh. She had the best laugh. From 2nd grade, I always knew she was special. We both were good students, but also had big senses of humor and immediately we became good friends. Then best friends, or biffles as she called it. All the way into adulthood. We didn’t talk everyday or even every month but we always stayed in contact. When we did talk, we talked often about our dreams. About being movie stars, and making amazing movies together. We talked about going to the Oscars together. We talked about being on sets, something she actually got to do a lot. She loved it. She felt alive, she told me it’s where she was the happiest. We also talked life. Her fears, her conflicts, our home lives, and our hardships. I always knew she was going through things but this is just too permanent. I have never lost someone that I was this close with. This is new feeling and I’m trying to feel them in full, while also maintaining my sanity. It’s hard.

I will honor you in all that I create in this life. I will never forget our times together. I will always miss you, and love you, and you will be with me always.
