✨ What stories do our bodies carry?
✨How do we move and encounter one another through our skinscape?

In this edition of Women’s Touch, Marie Chabert and Vanio Papadelli invite you to explore the body as a living landscape carrying sensations, memories, traces, restrictions and possibilities.

First we'll explore various ways of touching and responding to touch, tuning to our sensing and listening body.
We will then co-create a temporary archive of body stories, tracing, free writing and responding through touch, mapping sensations, witnessing dances and allowing words and sounds to emerge

Two weeks ago, I had the chance to be invited by The Playground at Rambert to explore some of my ongoing research around pillows, dreams and collective imagination.

Together with an incredible group of artists, we spent the evening exploring the materiality and imagery of pillows through Contact Improvisation scores, somatic practices and devising.

We moved between rest and play, dreams and exploring inner landscapes, throwing, catching, falling, floating, listening and imagining together.

Here's a feedback we received:
"There was such a special atmosphere in your studio, so calm, soft and beautifully considered. The sound, the pillows, the movement and the words all came together so wonderfully, creating a really unique world in space."

Thank you to all the wonderful artists who joined the research and brought so much curiosity, generosity and playfulness into the room.

And a huge thank you to Tommy Khosla @tommykhosla for your beautiful, dreamy music; to Rich Thornton @eatmydepth for being part of the research: brainstorming, trying things out, reading the poetry, and supporting me by being both flexible and a stable ground.

Almost two weeks ago, I had the chance to choreograph and explore some new research at The Playground, Rambert, working with pillows, somatic dreaming, Contact Improvisation, poetry and live music ✨

Here are a few glimpses into the process…

The Art of Play
Brighton
Saturday 26 September 3pm

After a sold out event in London last weekend, it's amazing to be able to offer it again in Brighton. Marie and I had a lot of fun with co-facilitating and it became apparent that CI and Play Fighting are natural bedfellows.

In this workshop we'll combine play-fighting and Contact Improvisation in novel and experimental ways. Expect games, movement scores, and partner explorations that invite you to explore touch, negotiation, weight, balance, support, challenge, intensity, playfulness and spontaneity.

What can these 2 disciplines teach us?

CI helps with learning how to listen, be attuned, keep our body soft and supple.
Play fighting teaches us to trust our body's wisdom in split-second decisions, and avoid sticking to patterns and old behaviours - the speed of reaction forces improvisation at every turn.

We have a fantastic group forming and a beautiful space with full padded floor close to Brighton train station.

About me:
With over 20 years of Contact Improvisation practice and experience teaching in dance institutions and festivals in the UK and internationally, I love sharing practical CI tools and skills alongside a playful, somatic and multidisciplinary approach. At the heart of my teaching is a desire to nurture curiosity and community, opening up different layers of physical, creative and relational experience. My Buddhist practice also informs my understanding of CI as a practice of interdependence — how we move, learn and grow through one another.

A CI jam to bring everyone together: London's CI teachers, organisers and you, the wider community for a time out to dance, lab and connect.

26th: Saturday 16:00 - 22:00

27th: Sunday 11:00-17:00

Our teaching and organising community is the foundation of London's CI community.
We want to celebrate being here together and meet you as a community, not just as individual practitioners.

Join us for one or two days of dancing, where you can fully let go—fall, fly, and be caught by the fabric of long-term, lush CI practices that our community holds. Experience CI as life integration where body meets mind and generates a collective field of care, curiosity and spirit.

We enter with as little agenda as possible, honouring the present moment that improvisation and jamming invite. Each day will be centred around spacious jams in the large Walworth Hall. Adjacent areas—the kitchen, living room, chill-out space and courtyard—give us room to chat, eat, rest, dream, and flow.

As our dancing and teaching community grows in size, practices, wisdom, and challenges, this event offers us a chance to jam our way into sensing who we are now and how we step into the future together.

Before and during the event, you are invited to share any questions you have about CI—technical, visionary, reflective, or concerning needs or serious concerns. We will dedicate 1.5 hours each day for teachers to explore these questions in small, spontaneous labs that you’re welcome to join on the spot. taken in London, United Kingdom by @m.chabert
