Here’s a clip of my recent practice session. I like to practice soloing with no thought.💭 No metronome, no boundaries. This is when I feel at peace and fully alive at the same time. It’s more to do with my state of mind than what it sounds like to listeners. It takes some effort for me to quiet the seemingly constant chatter in my head. The voices that says- oh that was good! Do more of that! This is what people like! Wow it’s really locking in! Or- that was off! That’s shit, I’m shit! That’s a lick! Etc. what’s interesting to me is that regardless if it’s positive or negative chatter, it’s all just chatter (ego talking) that distracts me from being present and letting the music happen. Once my mind is quiet, I’m able to access the source energy which is love, healing, and higher spiritual nature. When you exclude your’self’ from the equation, the stress and judgment disappears. Because it was not ‘me’ playing. It was just another expression or manifestation of god. This dynamic is present with all art forms, including the art of breathing, art of living, etc.. maybe even the art of scrolling? I’d have to agree. :) QUIET THE CHATTER, GIVE UP CONTROL, STOP THINKING AND LET IT HAPPEN. This is the practice.

2023 was one of the hardest year of my life, for a multitude of reasons, but it brought with it the most precious gift of my life. In the swan song of summer, our baby boy, Raymond Azaire Majette-Torres was born. A belly birth 1.5 weeks late, for a babe weighing 11lbs 4oz. A sight to behold!!

In the years preceding, we sacrificed everything to get here: relationships, finances, resources, TIME, indulgence, my body. Our life became austere and regimented, measuring and analyzing every aspect of our lives, with the hope that we would one day hold this boy in our arms. Although 2023 brought us heartache and uncertainty, we found an ease we hadn’t known in a half decade. I loved every minute this little guy was nestled safely in my womb. I loved every movement, every sensation, every ache. I felt more beautiful than ever in my body’s seemingly indefinite expansion. I missed my pregnant body the moment he was born.

But these last 3.5 months have left me in awe of what my body is capable of, who Azaire is becoming and what our future holds. Postpartum is a beast, though, and I am equally in awe of every mother/birthing person that’s come before me and those to come.

I also cannot thank @drbrianlevine enough for bringing those new life into ours and his support along the journey. We knew immediately we were safe in his hands. He also recommended the OB who delivered our boy, a literal dream. And we are so grateful to the love and care of our doula @courtney_bxdoula. She held us with such ease and care and was a soft place to land always. Love you 🧡🧡

We’re manifesting more miracles, more awe, abundance and hopefully some peace and stability. Spending the night snuggling the little one, and most likely falling asleep before midnight. Happy New Year! ✨🎉🎊🎉✨ by @m.m_drums

Somebody’s Mama….

FINALLY!!!
I don’t even know how to put in words how happy and blessed we feel to finally be welcoming another little soul into our little family. The road to get here was rough and steep, but we made it. We’re bewildered and overwhelmed, but we made it.
It would be remiss to announce this without acknowledging the 4 years of heartache that preceded this moment, or the fact that pregnancy after infertility is a complicated journey to navigate. We haven’t even felt comfortable announcing, terrified that this dream would be ripped from our hands. We are still processing our trauma and struggle to string together moments of joy, but the joy is building every day.
We wouldn’t be here without the magic touch of our doctor @drbrianlevine at @ccrm_ny. Walking into his office felt like the first full breath I took in 3 years, and we will be eternally grateful to him for the gift he gave us.

HERE ARE THREE CLIPS FROM A RECENT PRACTICE SESSION. I recommend listening with headphones as the cymbals can be harsh on the high end from a phone:

1) Sometimes I’ll add a repeating motif to a beat to give it some unique characteristic. In this case, it’s in the toms. As the beat develops, the toms stay relatively constant.
🖤
2) This one includes polyrhythmic motifs using singles, doubles, and six stroke rolls at varying metric subdivisions. (So- RRLL.. as 32nd notes, and as triplets. RLLRRL.. as 32nd notes, etc.) By keeping the hi hat playing quarters, the polyrhythmic effect can be heard more clearly.

3) This is a continued process for me to play in five. 5 is the subdivision and is grouped in larger phrases of 4. This creates an interesting duality where both common time and odd time live as one.
The subdivision: X•X••X•X••
but the larger 4 shows as:
