…the education of nature…

another case that came out great thanks to a phenomenal ceramist…veneers on 8/9…lab work by @nichedentalstudio

“it is the essence of art to be artificial. But it is its perfection to return to nature, remaining art. In short art is the education of nature. Thus, in its broadest sense, art is civilization. For civilization is nothing other than the unremitting aim at the major perfections of harmony”
-Alfred North Whitehead

tech•nol•o•gy // techne (τέχνη) “art,” “craft,” “skill,” logos (λόγος) “word,” “discourse,” “reason”

it’s there…why not use it?

this teenage patient just got out of ortho and wanted something to replace 7 and fill in the space around the peg lateral of 10.

resin bonded maryland bridge designed in exocad, pontic proximity to bone and soft tissue interface checked in blue sky bio, “long term temporary” printed in sprintray crown hd. direct bonding was done to address the peg lateral.

///end of clinical…beginning of rambling post script—feel free to skip///

with the exponential growth in technology (especially in AI) it’s not hard for me to imagine that one day we will all be living in a completely virtual world (this would make our job easier-just do the virtual design and be done with it). however, unless you take philosopher David Chalmers view that “virtual reality is genuine reality” we will continue to be mapping the virtual to the analog…to base reality if you will. it’s this transition i’m wary of…we shouldn’t take what we’re seeing on the screen for granted…the humorous words of Neil Postman seem apropos….

“we must keep in mind the story of the statistician who drowned while trying to wade across a river with an average depth of four feet “ ~Technopoly: The Surrender of Culture to Technology

…all that being said, I still think what we’re able to do with modern technology is amazing…

indirects on lower incisors…

…i’ve always been uncomfortable doing these…preferring instead to see if I can get by with conservative resin restorations…however with bopt preps (aka vertical prep design) i’m able to conserve the cervical tooth structure

this case had limited enamel to bond to for veneers so i opted for “bopt-ish” prep designs and zirconia crowns…amanda knocked it out the park…patient was thrilled…everyone wins…

the long game…

…i always appreciate patients who are willing to invest in longer treatment in order to achieve better end results…

…this patient came to us two years ago due to chipping of her old pfm crowns, during her consult she mentioned that she also wished her lower teeth were straighter…

we put her in long term provisionals and sent her to the orthodontist for treatment…then back to us for the definitive restorations (8/9 crowns 7/10 veneers)…

special thanks to @loflinw with @jamesriverortho for the excellent communication and orthodontic treatment

and to @lucaslammott with @nichedentalstudio for the stellar ceramics…our patient was blown away…nice work brother

treatment with neuromodulators-

there has been a shift in contemporary treatments with botox from a completely “frozen” expressionless face to a softening (or smoothing) effect without taking away expression completely—this is what we’re aiming for at MFD when treating patients with botox

the end result is a more natural look and healthy happy patients

pre and post pics were taken 2 weeks apart

✨Interested in veneers? - Here is a case done by Dr. Tomoda.

At the one year mark both esthetics and function are still optimal.

At MFD we practice responsible esthetics. While porcelain veneers are not for everyone, they can be excellent treatment option to fix discolored teeth or fillings as was done in this case. Porcelain veneers have the benefits of being highly esthetic and conservative (you don’t have to remove as much underlying tooth structure).

It’s critical in these types of cases to not only have a careful clinician but also a skilled ceramicist that handcrafts each veneer (for this case we were able to work with the talented @lucaslammott (Lucas Lammott) at @nichedentalstudio (Niche Dental Studio). The end result? A beautiful natural smile.

being conservative is hard…

*sorry guys this is a repost…misspelled ceramics in the last one*

…we had plenty of healthy enamel to bond to for this case…there is always a fine line as a clinician of giving the ceramicist enough space to work with and conserving enamel…I was fortunate enough to work with an amazing ceramicist Lucas Lammott and had a great patient…no hiding: there’s a small external crack noted on edge of 11, most likely due to error on my part at delivery...it’s not noticeable under normal lighting and we decided to monitor for now…I’m not too concerned with small imperfections like these as long as I know the porcelain has been bonded correctly… if this was visible and bothered the patient, in lieu of replacing the whole veneer, one option to try would be a porcelain resin infiltration repair. Otherwise this case came out great.

Thanks to @nichedentalstudio and @lucaslammott for the high caliber ceramic work

Thanks to @cathytdm for letting me borrow her extension tube to snap photos for this case

details.....

its the small details that make a case stand out aesthetically for me...like a hint of gingival recession on #9 giving the appearance of slightly different positioning while still maintaining overall case symmetry

removable pros has always been a struggle of mine...it helps to have a talented technician working on the lab side of things

beautiful work by jenelle tabaković @jtlabqueen

special thanks to @generoyzengurt for the g.a.t. stl. files and for sharing his wisdom with everyone...and to @bansungyong for all the removable pros posts...i've learned so much from both of you.
